Breakdown insurance or warranty, older X351s

I have a year of CPO warranty left on my 2015, and when it expires I should have about 50K miles.
When the CPO expires, I was thinking that I would like to still protect myself against a catastrophic bill (which is basically engine or transmission failure). I'm mainly interested in protecting against the most expensive major failures.
Is it possible to take out breakdown insurance or a warranty at that sort of age and mileage?
Has anyone done this and can recommend (or not) any policies?
I thought warranties were usually sold with used cars. Can one just go ahead and purchase one on a car one already owns?
Thanks!

Yes, you can purchase one on a car you already own.
Unfortunately, all of these extended warranties designed to deny your claims. This (https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/o...rranty-227500/) is pretty much the norm.
If you want to protect yourself against a catastrophic bill, then find a reputable independent Jaguar specialist and invest into your car's maintenance by going above and beyond.
For example - did you already changed fluid and filter in your transmission? Did you have anyone inspect/listen for timing chain issues? When was the last time engine coolant was checked? Have you had someone look over your cooling hoses and plastic pipes? These get brittle and start leaking.
A LOT of problems have root cause of insufficient maintenance and/or can be caught with preemptive repairs.

I also recommend taking your car to an independent specialist 6 month before your CPO expires - this way if there are on-going issues (e.g. timing chain and tensoner) that have not yet resulted in failure, you will have enough time to get them resolved under warranty. Why 6 months? Some dealers will try to run the clock out on you, but 6 month is too long to try this.

Back in August I bought a 2015 used X351 privately, then took it to my local Jaguar dealer ( who I have been using 30 years ) , they gave the car a full going over and then were happy to give me ( I obviously had to pay for it ) a full Jaguar warranty on it.
On my previous XJ , a 2011 bought from new, I bought a full Jaguar extended warranty for each year after the original 3 year warranty ended,
you may have this option in Canada if you ask your local dealer or look online.

My understanding is that it has to be within the standard warranty period (4 years old, 50K miles on my car) to apply for the extended Jaguar one.

Probability of this suddenly happening to you is negligible. Most "complete engine failure" scenarios are preventable if you pay attention to your fluids and odd engine noises. Stories you read here forgot to mention that they drove for months with car rattling. Watch couple videos on chain rattle on Youtube so you know what to listen to, or even better get a local independent Jaguar specialist inspect it and your coolant piping.

Your 2015 should have the updated chain tensioner and guides, so probably not much worry needed there. Coolant lines are always a concern. But there are a lot of other non-catastrophic repairs that can add up to $$$, so I think Jaguar extended warranty is worth it.
If you can’t get a Jaguar extended warranty, I think things get more difficult for you. My understanding is that in California you can only buy aftermarket warranties from dealerships. I looked at getting a third party (Endurance) warranty for my car (a 2010) and it is legal in all states except for California.
I looked at getting Mechanical Breakdown Insurance (MBI) too (available in California) but my search suggested this is only available for newer cars (perhaps yours is still eligible).
Hopefully you find what you’re looking for.

I am in a similar situation but about 1 year ahead of you. My 2014 XJR CPO warranty ran out in August 2019.
I have been very happy with the almost complete lack of problems I have had. Only one repair while under warranty and it was a water pump that the dealer caught when I had an oil change done.
Since the warranty ended I did have 1 O2 sensor fail and that cost me $50 or so. Just has been the best car I have ever owned. Currently only at 42K miles.
If you are on this forum you are informed and aware of the problems. I think this is key. The real big disasters are guys who come on here after the fact and simply don't pay attention to the car until it breaks. Then they whine and moan about class action law suits and other things.
I do currently have a soft SC snout clunk and have the part but don't plan to replace for a while yet. Probably will send the blower out to be ported when I change the snout.
I did not see it but can you DIY or will you need to pay?
If paying maybe try to find an independent garage ahead of time just in case repairs are needed.
I am also very maintenance focused. I have already changed the rear diff oil and for sure DON'T believe any of the lifetime fluid crap!!!
I also went back down to 6K-7K oil change intervals. Still do NOT agree with Jaguar on 16K or once a year oil changes. That's just a bad idea all the way around.
