Buying a 2011.... questions
Hi all, I sold my 06 X Type last week and I'm in the middle of purchasing a 2011 XJ 5.0 V8 with 36K on it....
I'll be flying up to get it from the dealers, and drive it 12 hrs home (probably get a hotel after 6 hrs)
Carfax shows everything perfect and all service records upto date.....
Once I get home, I'm a pre maintenance freak, oil, trans oil, brakes, what do I need to look for? and the metal replacement on water pump????? help!
Thanks all in advance........
FYI, this will be my dream car especially in green.......

Phil, honestly, if the oil changes have been maintained, then really your only worry will be the water pump. You can be pre-emptive and change it out to the latest rev just to make sure that you don't suffer a failure that is unplanned. When you do it, look for the metal transition tube from the back of the water pump to the oil cooler. This is a part that has just recently come out and corrects something that supposedly fails a lot (part goes from plastic to metal).
Sure you can look at the brakes and see if they need changed. I think you are going to find all the bugs on the drive home. If you want to get a good feeling about the car, challenge the dealership that since you are driving it 12 hours home that if you have a problem, the dealership will cover the costs. If the dealership is willing to do that, then you most likely have a really good car on your hands. If they really waffle, then you may want to reconsider. I am sure they are going to give you a bit of grief over a statement like that, but if they are doing what they are saying, then they shouldn't have too much of an issue.

Phil, if you're buying the car from a JLR dealer, they should give you a print-out of all JLR service performed on the car. This info includes recalls and TSB's. If you're purchasing from an independent dealer, visit a JLR dealer (preferably before you buy the car) and provide them with a VIN. I had to bribe my local service advisor with sandwiches every time I brought in a new VIN, but I eliminated a lot of candidates without the aggravation of travel. This is Page 1 of three pages:
This does not reflect services performed by shops other than JLR, but it will show you if Jaguar replaced the water pump,or fixed the sunroof rattle, or the sticky buttons etc.

On my 2012, I had a sudden and massive coolant leak, so I replaced the water pump, which after removal proved to be original and in perfect shape… culprit was in fact the plastic box that interconnects the primary coolant circuit and the heater circuit, located in the V of the engine.
Bad soldering.
While changing a 10 year pump is always a good idea, changing also that stupidly manufactured box seems more than advisable…

I second the cooling system caution as well. Those were the highest priced items I had jaguar replace when it overheated going to Moreno Valley. Hope your chain tensioners are good as well. You'll hear the clunking noise. I have to replace mine, I'm at around 60k miles. My xjl has been sitting for now.

930 sweet smooth miles drive back to Louisiana....
At 72 mph shows 33 mpg, impressive, and its quicker than my Dodge Charger, and yes its governed to 125 mph,
So, the waterpump deal, I'm very mechanically inclined, is there a water pump kit I need to buy to change the plastic tubes to metal?
I cant upload pics to the forum via my cellphone!!
Oh, thx, (forget the poster) for showing me how to check the oil..... love it..

Phil, there isn't a "kit" per se that you buy that has all the parts in it. If you look in the search area, you will find that people have posted the list of parts that should be gotten when doing a water pump change. The one thing that will be left out is the metal transition tube on the back side of the water pump (to the oil cooler). This is a recent part that has become available that is now made out of metal vice plastic. All the other tubing will still be plastic unless you fabricate something yourself.

Long story cut short, with the car being 2011 the dealership kind of hesitant working on it, but with that curveball, they have a local mechanic that's actually Jag certified and not dealer prices on labor (Dealer is $158 hr)
Will be making appointment soon to change waterpump and ALL plastic fittings associated with the cooling system around the engine.
I dont want to be out driving and that coolant light come on....
