Catalytic converter honeycomb refitting
Hi Comrads,
the previous owner of my 2014 XJL 3.0 V6, has emptied both catalytic converters therefore I´m going to welding some new Honeycomb Catalytic Converters into the old box.
The car still sits in the garage and I would like to know if someone of you guys know what the diameter of these units are.
Thanks and greetings to ya all
Frank

Thanks much Frank as I had not seen just the honeycomb portion for sale before?
These inserts are approved replacement parts? If so that would be cheaper than replacing the entire cat assembly.
Sorry I don't know how you would get that dimension unless someone has an old cat sitting around?

Hi clubairth1,
yes, actually it´s not a big deal cutting this thing open and welding it together after you replaced the honeycombs. These honeycombs are not approved by jaguar, but at the end it doesn´t matter anyhow because
when you pass the emission test, nobody cares. China is already making all these honeycombs for the rest of the world. You can decide if you are going to a metal based honeycomb or a
ceramic based one which are cheaper. In the meanwhile during I´m writing this, I got an update and the dimensions are 120 x 100 for the honeycombs.
Here the link where you could get those:

Thanks for your help and take care

I think that's a game changer! I mean $70 for the replacement honey comb inside?? The converters on my car (2014 XJR) are listed at $2200 EACH from Jaguar!!!
Yes your right they are ALL made in China anyway but you found the supplier.
How did you find what size you needed as it's a welded assembly? I can see this becoming popular as we have a number of replacement catalytic converter questions on all the forums and the cost is always huge. Getting the right size will be the challenge.
Were you able to pass emission testing with these?

Yes, everything depends on the quality, so you should look for a high quality honeycomb. The key is the precious metal
that they are using for the surface of the honeycomb, which consist of Platin, Palladium, Rhodium etc. So the cheap ones have less of this precious metal on their surface that´s
why they are so cheap, and they will last for 1 Year or less, if you get a better one ...for about $100~200 per honeycomb it will last for about 3-8 Years.
Figuring the numbers is the important thing, but there are plenty of companies out there who are producing aftermarket catalytic converters, in my
case, I have asked one of them and I got the numbers.
This polish company below produces aftermarket catalytic converters:

And yes, if you get a high quality honeycomb you will pass the emission no doubt.

Being a 2014 XJL 3.0 it will have the AJ126 engine.
Those engines use twin-brick catalytic converters, i.e. two bricks each side with a small gap between the bricks.
The engine also has six count 'em six oxygen sensors, three each side, designated as upstream, mid-cat and downstream. Obviously the mid-cat sensor plugs in between the two bricks.
So I'm not sure if or how it would work replacing the guts of the cats with after-market honeycombs and even if it can be done you would need four half-size bricks.
If you tried to stick a bigger/longer single brick in each side the mid-cat O2 sensors would have nowhere to go and who knows what DTCs and other problems that could cause.

What are they doing different that even the better quality ones can last for only 3 years and maybe up to 8? Factory cats will last for decades as long as the engine is in tune. What destroys OEM cats is running rich or lean or blowing oil into them, not how much you drive or how you drive.

Hey Guys,
Finally I have received the honeycombs from China ($280 + customs) which I installed this weekend. It took me 6 hours in total which includs unmount+mount the exhaust, installing the honeycombs and welding everything together. Actually it was a straight forward job.
The car runs smooth nothing to complain about, you can´t smell the typical exhaust fumes anymore. Will let you know the outcome after emission test.
Thanks
Frank

Frank your a pioneer!
Can you post back on the cost? Or is the cost just the inserts since you did all the cutting and welding?
Your welding looks so good. MIG or TIG?
I just had my drivers side Cat off and took a picture but it did not come out worth a dang. Yours are great but I wanted to say that those honey combs look exactly like what I saw inside the factory cat.

Hi clubairth1,
thanks for your feedback, I´m still practicing with my tig welder but this time I´m more than happy with the results :-).
I did all by myself, so I had only the $300 for the parts. If you go to a shop, you will have
to add at least 4 hours of labor.
Here are the links for the honeycombs which I used for my project.
