Roof popping noises on early cars. There was a major Jaguar program to sort this out, and I haven't seen anything recently on this. Cars were even being pulled of the production line to fix.
So it depends what year you're thinking of, but dealers should have fixed most of this problem on those. There will always be one or two around where the owners were deaf or not bothered about it.

And thanks, bought a 60 plate one, like you say any problems should be sorted as it is quite a large approved Jaguar dealer

Have had our 2011 SS for over a year now and with the exception of the nav screen going dark (or, blue in this case) it's been trouble free. What a beast of a car! Can hardly take off w/o chirping the wheels..... We love it so much we're actually considering trading it for the XJR when it it available.
Can highly recommend one. Good luck.

Most things now seem to be minor glitches, but the continuing use of large diameter wheels and low profile tyres means the ride quality may not be to everybody's expectations.
Production levels of the XJ are nowhere near that of the XF, so problems can take longer to show a trend needing urgent remediation. (Once is happenstance, twice is co-incidence, third time it's enemy action !)

Mine's getting the roof done next week while it's in for service. It's not bothered me hugely over the past year, but I do want it fixed. It sounds like the noise a ring makes when you tap your finger on a table, and it happens when the chassis flexes.
Otherwise, it's too long to fit in parking spaces, and it seems to want to stop for fuel about as frequently as my children need to stop to release liquids!

I can reiterate that the roof popping issue almost had Jaguar management having a corporate heart attack, (the new Indian owners, not Ford BTW), and a really major problem-solving effort was put into this. It seems to have had results as this problem has gone now.
The only thing I found with the car during a test drive was the waist line seems so high its a bit like driving an armoured car, with one's head sticking out the driver port ! That and the style with the cantrail line swooping down so fast, means that those getting into the rear seats tend to bang their heads on it.

Dam I love this car! It can be a rocket ship when you want to stomp on it and are breaking 100 in an instant. It handles well and when going out for dinner with the wife and friends it is a luxury transporter with a phenomenal audio system. last week drove from home in Atlanta to Nashville to meet friends for dinner at Cat Bird Seat by myself, 250 miles melted away. Driving on the way out through the mountains I beat-up on a couple of BMWs (a 335 and a 4 year old M3) and on the flats just cruised at 80ish. I got 25 mpg and arrived refreshed.
