Hello,
i dont know if i am reading the coolant level correctly, when the engine is cold, the coolant is 1/16" under the low mark on the reservoir, but when i open the filler cap, the coolant is over the little max sign![Icon Screwy](https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_screwy.gif)

Basti,
The reservoir gets filled when the water pump circulates the coolant, which gets hot and expands, and pressure in the system causes the hot coolant to flow into the overflow reservoir. After you shut off the engine, the hot coolant in the radiator begins to cool off. As it cools, that coolant shrinks and since it is a closed system, a vacuum is created that sucks the coolant from the overflow tank back into the radiator.
You should never open the radiator cap on a hot engine. That coolant is very hot and is pressurized, so merely loosening the cap can cause it to blow off of the radiator and you can get hit by that projectile and get severely scalded.
The amount of coolant in the overflow tank will vary. You stated that when cold, the coolant in the overflow tank is slightly under the low mark. That's the cold fill line, so you could add a wee bit more but I think that's not necessary - it's close enough. And yes, when cold the radiator should be full. As yours is. Add coolant to the overflow tank if it's low. Too much coolant will overfill the overflow tank with the excess forced out of the overflow tube and into your engine compartment and onto the ground.
