Default dealer sprayed something on paint...

braved the chilly weather and washed the car today after getting it back from the dealer from last weekend. the car was in for the headliner being replaced due to a stitch came loose. while drying the car off noticed the paint seemed "rough" (kinda flat paint finish feel) in some areas. paint looks fine but doesnt have that glossy waxed feel....gonna contact dealer about this. hope this can be corrected and how??

A clay bar will remove the contamination and make the paint feel smooth like new. You should also wax it after. Clay bar kits can be found at most auto parts stores and online. My favorite is the pinnacle clay bar which is sold online but any brand will work just fine.

Default Noticed same thing with paint

That is so wierd. I noticed the same thing on my paint. I waxed mine about 4 times already. But when you touch the hood or trunklid and glide your hand across you get the "rough" sound. It looks perfect though. I thought of claying it off, but why? Its a new car? Is it a different paint type? LIke I said, it looks perfect, but feels "rough".

Claying your car should help. New cars go through a lot during transportation and the roughness is contaminants that are stuck to the paint. Common contaminants are rail dust (if transported by train) or tar from the road. Plus, most dealer "prep" is usually pretty poor and introduces scratches into the paint. I always do a full detail job as soon as I get the car home to undo all the damage introduced during transport/handling before putting on a good sealant or wax for long term protection.

gears you should clay the entire car...i was only gonna clay the rough areas i felt. i was surprised to see what the clay picked off the car. the hood, top and trunk were the worse. i clayed the entire car with Meguiars clay bar with detail mist as lubricant. once done i used Meguiars liquid spray wax...car was reflecting everything around the car! after i was done i ran my hand across all areas of the car and felt no rough areas or gritty feel. i was very pleased with this product.

Mdjag, if you really want to get crazy, you can use that meguiars spray wax and wax the wheels as well, they will stay cleaner longer and be easier to clean the next time.

You guys should research a product called "matrix micro coating" which is an aviation grade ceramic coating that needs to be professionally applied. I had it done on my LS460 and I have *never* waxed it since then (car was new) and this is how it looks like right now, almost 4 years later. It's a 2007 car.

Hi MDJag, thanks for the info. I wasn't sure if I should clay down a brand new car. No I am. Makes perfect sense. I will clay down the car with my proven McGuires clay kit. Then wax again. It's just sitting in my garage in this crap winter weater here anyways. Something to do at least.
The comment on the wheel wax is correct. I waxed my wheels in the past. They do stay cleaner longer. But its a lot of work and not sure if it is worth it.
And thanks Maybe_XJ for the info on the coating.

Thanks for the info. That certainly makes sense and I decided to clay down the car based on that info.

You're welcome, and I'm not joking, this product is simply amazing. Seriously, no need to wax or clay or anything anymore. It's just incredible. I paid over $1,000.00 to have it professionally applied (it takes all day, several phases) but man... it's so worth it. Any car that I buy from now on is going to have matrix micro coating applied to it.

That coating looks very interesting and I would definitely consider it if I had purchased the car but I can't see paying over 1K to have it applied for a car I leased for 36 months. Your Lexus 460 paint looks great by the way, it definitely seems to work.

I just ordered my kit. My problem will come with finding someone competent enough to apply it. I wonder how it compares to Swissvax. That was the way I originally intended to go. I know people who you that and their paint looks like water.

Yes really good. I guess a better phrase would have been liquid metal. Paul Dalton's Crystal Rock from Swissvax is one of the products.

When I decided on the matrix micro coating on my car, I had a detail shop that was authorized by them to do the job. There are several phases and they have to use some special lights during one of those phases - seems like it's for proper curing and there is also appropriate temperature settings to be respected. It isn't your regular wax job / detail shop work. But you really reap the benefits for life, as the car doesn't need ANY treatment EVER again. Dirt just doesn't stick to the car that easily, and when you wash it, it comes off very easily to a better-than-new shine. I was very skeptical of this product at first, but just the fact that I don't have to bother anymore is worth the price.

Have you heard of "Cilajet" aviation grade? it seems similar to the "matrix micro coating".. its a little cheaper.. for my XJL I got quoted like $500 something with a 1 year warranty and like $800 something for 3 yr warranty.. I've not got it done yet..check it out.. the Cilajet maybe you can get it done on another car and compare the results, who knows might save a buck!
