I had thought of only offering $500, but when he asked for $1,000 it seemed about right. Maybe it has something to do with location. Since you are in Texas as opposed to my being closer to Baltimore Harbor where the vehicles enter the U.S. Who knows.

It was also in May, 2010 when the dealer's initial order of 10 cars were coming in. Since it was only going to be for about a month and I was sure that I wanted the car, I didn't argue. They had also already taken my Maserati QP in trade and written me a check, so they really wanted to make sure I took the car. I only put $500 down when we special ordered my wife's MB E550 coupe, so I think $5,000 is on the high side for a normal deal.

The amount of the deposit can sometimes be proportional to the "uniqueness" of the car you order. If you ordered a black/black with Bowers and Wilkens, then they would not be as disappointed if you backed out than they might be with an unusual combination of colors and options.
Most dealers also refer to it as a "partial payment" rather than a deposit.....deposit infers that you can get the money refunded if you change your mind and that is usually not the case.

It is up to the discretion of the dealer if you get your money back. If you custom order the car with certain features and colors that is fair to the dealer. If you buy from inventory you should not even have to put a deposit down and if you should get your money back. Most dealers ask for $ 5,000 but I never agree to that. In most cases dealer will agree to less. In my case it was $ 2,500. If they won't agree, go to another dealer.
A serious dealer may even refund your money if you custom ordered as long as they know they can sell it or already have another buyer. There are all kind of characters in the car dealer business and if they are desperate or cash poor at the time, they may simply keep your money and stick it to you. But that is the exception and not the rule.
