Default EPB Applied Automatically or Not??

My 2014 XJR has the EPB as do all XJ's. But it never has applied the EPB automatically when the car is shifted into Park. Why I don't know and have been unable to find out. If I apply the EPB is does come on and does release automatically when I shift from Park. I think it is operating correctly.

I have found several clues but it looks like depending on the year of your XJ the EPB IS applied automatically. I also found a procedure in the Owners Handbook about how to turn off the automatic application of the EPB BUT it was in a 2013 Owners Handbook.
Here is the wording in the 2013 Owners Handbook. I don't understand the statement about "unless P (Park) is selected". That makes no sense at all??

But looking in my 2014 Owners Handbook this is all missing and has been replaced with a one sentence statement;

More digging and I find on the 2017 XJ's this statement;

So it looks like from 2016 and up the XJ's DID return to automatic EPB operation and apparently some of the 2009-2015 XJ's do not? I may be wrong here as it only notes "drive away release" and does not explicitly say the EPB is applied when the car is shifted into Park.

Now I have never done the disable procedure as posted above and even more odd is there is no enable procedure??

Anyone know how to enable the automatic application of the EPB on the XJ??
Does anyone with a 2009-2015 XJ have the EPB set to automatically apply when the car is shifted into Park?

clubairth, the "automatic application" of the EPB is meant to prevent the car from rolling away when the car is parked, not so much to be a driver's assistant. It applies itself when the ignition is turned off, the car is moving more than 2 mph, and the gear selector is not in Park. The simple act of moving the gear selector to Park would disable this feature. I guess you could pull into a parking spot, leave the gear selector in say DRIVE and turn off the car. BUt, I don't think even that is going to enable the automatic EPB feature (you won't be moving more than 2 mph).. Granted, it will move the gear selector to the PARK position for you.

As for enabling it, do the disable procedure. That should enable it again.

One interesting thing that I did learn about the EPB is that it is able to be engaged while moving and in gear (in case your brakes completely fail for some reason). It has 2 modes of operation: Above and below 20 mph. Below 20 mph, you lift up on the EPB, it will attempt to apply the EPB with full braking force. Once you release the switch, it will fully release the EPB. Above 20 mph, it will gradually apply the EPB. The longer you hold the switch up, the more engagement you get until you have 100% engagement. Then as you release, it will slowly release the EPB until it is fully released. So, you can lift and drop the EPB switch in an emergency to control how much braking force you are applying.

Yes I will try the disable procedure and see if it might somehow get the automatic EPB enabled again.

It's a Central Configuration change to enable the functionality on older model years.

That's good to know but I don't have much experience messing with the CCF but have heard of it and know it used to enable and disable certain things. I own and use SDD but have found editing the CCF is something I have not done yet.
Can anyone point to where in the CCF this option "might" be?

It's called Shift into Park Apply. The default setting on a facelift is "Shift into park apply disabled | Shift out of park release enabled". The most ideal setting would be "Shift into park apply enabled | Shift out of park release enabled.

Having thought about it more though, I might be wrong with my last comment as the current setting on the pre-facelift is "Not Supported". It would normally be "Not Fitted" if it's an option that can be changed. So perhaps the BCM/GWM in it's current state doesn't have the functionality built into for it to be turned on. This could potentially change with an update of BCM/GWM module.

IMHO, not worth the risk of updating the modules just to find out.

Thanks again for your great info! What year is considered a facelift? I have a 2014 model.

You're welcome. Generally it would be a late 2015 car, which would be a MY16. You can tell by looking at the headlights. J Blade headlights = facelift.
