Farewell to my XJL
#21
I just got a 2006 XK8 but my next Jaguar is going to be like my friends. He bought a really nice 1980 XJ with a blown motor for $1,200. He then took out the motor and trans and had the body totally redone and painted. (it was still in good shape) He had some of the the interior redone. He then installed a rebuilt Chevy V8 with a 3 or 4 speed over drive Chevy trans. The car is awesome, classic Jaguar with the reliably of a Chevy. He had others do most of the work and it cost him $12k total for a great classic car. I'm now looking for an early XJ.... Enough computers and cheap parts.

No need to pay 12K for one. They do come up on Craigslist now and then, with conversion done, usually $6 to $7K around here. An acquaintance called it his "Jagrolet".
The model you're looking for is XJ6, series 1,2 or 3. Another advantage is most parts (suspension etc) are cheap as chips. However, Delanair MkII heater - be afraid, very afraid. Consider walking away if not all heat and A/C functions are working. I spent about 120 hours getting the one in the XJS working right, and that's just for heat. Still have no A/C. That's $12K done at a shop!
