Default Fuse Related to Suspension Fault / Active Dynamics Fault

My car recently is getting the suspension fault and active dynamic fault warning intermittently. If I off the engine for awhile, it's gone but after driving for around 10 minutes the warnings would come back. Workshop advised to change the RH height sensor as the error code indicated this was the issue.

Wanted to check the fuses related to these before I go ahead with the change as it's an over USD370+ bill for just this sensor in my country.

Can anyhow direct me to which fuses should I checked and the location please?

MS333, I am not sure what you are attempting to gain by checking a fuse for this problem. In this case, you have a computer module that lies between the fuse and the height sensor and all of the height sensors go through the same computer. So, checking the fuse is a bit of a wild goose chase. I would ask which height sensor they are quoting as you have 2 for each side. But, for a repair bill of $370, that is a rear height sensor.

I am familiar with this problem. I had it on my car and it took me awhile to figure out what was going on. in my case, it ended up being the front dampener. In a shop, this would have been a $1000ish USD bill, mainly because of the cost of a new dampener.

I have the same issue and the diagnostics indicate the Right Front ride height sensor. Physically, where is this sensor located and is it a simple job to replace this myself or something best left to the dealership. I recall reading in a thread here that it is not uncommon that frayed wiring leading to the sensor shorting to ground could be the cause of the fault, so a close inspection of that would be prudent before a part replacement.
Your help and advice is appreciated.

MS333 and kernt, this seems to be a common issue with the XJ. None of the other sensors seem to give up other than the right front. Replacing it is not hard. I did it myself. To do it properly, you do need to have access to the SDD software to recalibrate the ride height. Granted, I didn't do that and the car rides just fine. The big thing is the height sensor is in the damper (shock). So, the part is going to be rather expensive. So, if you are getting the repair for $370, then they are installing a used damper. A new one is like $700 as I recall.

Thermo,
Does this look correct? I don't see a wire harness fitting. Suggestion is to replace as a pair.

thanks for the info. Interesting to note that only the right front height sensor has this issue, makes me feel better that this is a common XJ issue .

Unfortunately, $370 is just for the sensor. I'm in Singapore and Jag specialist (non dealer) workshops here tend to charge a premium. The local stockists don't have the sensor and the workshop is charging a premium to order from the UK.

I intend to order the sensor from overseas myself if the savings is quite substantial. Anyone has any recommendations for a reputable and trustworthy seller?

kernt, you have to remember that this is a shock with a level sensor built into it. Now, these are not your normal shocks and they are designed to last a bit longer than a standard shock. So, if you have say 50K miles/75000 KM, then you should be good replacing only 1 with a new part. Now, if you are using a used part, then if you find something with roughly the same miles, then you are good with only 1. But, if you have say 250K miles/400000 KM on your car, then replacing the pair would be advisable. As for the piece that you linked, I do not think that is the correct piece. I do not see a plug on the top of the strut.

MS333, I would look at a site like e-bay or aliexpress for the part. If you are getting a used part, then I would make sure that if the vehicle was involved in an accident, it was hit in the rear. This will ensure you don't get a bad part. As for finding a shop, you may have to just bite the bullet and pay what they are asking. I would love to travel again to Singapore and help you with this. I loved my time there.

Thanks Thermo. It seems the entire Singapore doesn't stock up this part. I checked with the local dealer, and they do not have the part either and requires 2 weeks lead time to order from overseas.
I'll probably purchase this part myself as I'm travelling to Hanoi soon and a local parts dealer there quoted USD210.

Do you happen to know whether the part is the same for both the right and left side, as google search only indicate the part number C2D23151?

p.s. hit me up the next time you are in SG, we could hang out for a bit!

I'm confused - are you folks talking about the ride height sensor (the little articulating arm) that attaches between the frame and the control arm? Or are you talking about the active dampening control of the front shock absorber (what the wires on top of the shock are for)?

Now I'm confused and not sure. I get an intermittent fault (every trip now) message on my dash: Adaptive Dynamics Fault which is immediately followed with Suspension Fault. Messages are cleared via the OK button on the steering wheel but the fault indicator remains lighted. Using my Foxwell code reader for Jaguar and reading the trouble codes in Chassis Control Module the ID is C1 A0* 4-14 Intermittent Front Right height sensor. Both you and thermo have senior member status so I yield to you both. FWIW, SNG Barrett has the shock in stock and quoted me $392.

MS333...looked at that part and it certainly isn't what I thought. Look at the additional posts in this thread to be sure.

hi, I’m getting the same fault warnings as you. The jag specialist shop I went to indicate the error code as the ride height sensor that’s attached to the control arm and frame though.

I know there’s another sensor at the top of the shock, is that also a height sensor?

I think the sensor is inside the shock and not serviceable. There is a wire connector at the top of the shock which I think leads to the control module. I'm hoping Thermo chimes in as he seems quite familiar with this. Maybe 12jagmark can reply also.

I believe I still have the shock and height sensor. Let me tear it apart to see what the exact make up is and include pictures so it is clear exactly how it is built and helpful to others.

Thanks, I’m getting confused also. As I’ve thought the sensor that attached to the control arm and frame is the height sensor (though I believed it also affects the headlight leveling).

I’ve googled and came across an image whereby this particular sensor is

the height sensor. So I’m wondering whether the sensor in the shock is consider a height sensor also or?

Yes confusing? Sure looks like the sensor is a separate item and there are 4 of them one for each corner of the car?

OR...#1 and #2 in your drawing are the left and right front height sensors but they only "sense" the height and send a signal to the shock which actually makes the height change.
These sensors (made in China) are readily available on ebay (new) for about $45.

FYI, i asked in a Jag FB group on the sensor and gotten a reply:

I dont think there are sensor inside of absorder, The wires going in to the absorder are pwm signal for active suspension control.
