Phil, after entering the address, you have to hit the "OK" button, this then takes you to a different screen to choose the route. From there, you can hit the button to start the navigation. Wiht you asking this question, I need to go out to the car and walk through it. I know one of the things that gets me every time is you have to select the state that you are searching for first before entering the other data. Doing something local is not that big of a deal. But, when traveling long distance, this bites me every time. Not sure if this may be getting you too.

Setting a destination address
1. From the navigation MENU screen, select Dest.entry then either Address or Postcode.
2. With Address selected, use the keyboard to enter the town name. If there is a choice of same name
towns, select from the displayed list. Now enter the address details. Again a list will be displayed.
Select from the list to confirm.
With Postcode selected, use the keyboard to enter a postcode. Use the long spacebar to
enter any required spaces. NOTE: Postcode entry is available only in western Europe.
3. When entry is complete, touch OK. When you are ready to start route calculation, touch Destination. (this are what most people missing)
4. The screen displays Route 1. To view alternative routes touch 3 Routes. To use an alternative route, touch one of the selections.
5. Touch GO to commence guidance.
The Quick start guide have pics for clarify. You can find link for it on Sticky section (hanbook thread)

Google, Waze and even Apple now have better maps than the early XJ's. Our system is by Denso, and frankly it is crap. Overly complex, backwards (to Western users), and not terribly accurate. I had my maps upgraded to the latest version when I bought the car in 2019, and there are several US roads constructed well before this date that aren't appearing. I've given up using the on-board GPS (but still love the car).

... when I bought the car in 2019, and there are several US roads constructed well before this date ...
As more auto manufacturers integrate all user interfaces into the center stack, it has become all but impossible to upgrade only OE infotainment. I suppose that's also an intended part of the "revenue stream" ... not-so-gently nudging us to buy new cars.
