Help!!! 2011 xj brakes GROAN...
I have a new 2011 xj that I got 5 weeks ago.Whenever I come to a stop no matter how hard I try to feather the brakes the stop is usually abrupt and the brakes make a groan noise when you apply brake and take your foot off.I brought it in for service and they had it for a day.I picked up car and first stop GROAN I was so annoyed I left but called as soon as I got home and told them SOMETHING had to be done, that it was ridiculous to pay almost $1000.00 a mo and have this performance.I have had at least 25 new cars in my life and never had this problem.HELP!!!!!

jb, first off, welcome to the forums. I think you will find a lot of useful information here. So, look around, see what you can find and go from there. We also ask that you stop by the "New Member" forum and introduce yourself there. I'm sure a lot of people will be interested in you as you have one of the "new toys" (I know I am interested as I am looking at possibly upgrading). So, stop by, tell us a little bit about yourself.
Now, for your problem. The groaning that you are hearing is most likely from the pads vibrating some against the caliper, resulting in the groan that you are hearing. My normal fix for something like that is to remove the calipers from the rotors and then remove the pads. Then on the backside of the pads to lay some "brake quiet" pad adhesive. This will "glue" the pad to the pistons in the caliper while also putting a very thin rubber layer between the pad and the caliper. This should resolve your noise issue.
I know this is the "cheap" way out, but I also find that it works too. So, call it what you want. The only other thing that I could possibly recommend is doing a pad changeout on the car and seeing if that helps. It is possible one of the pads got something on it and now it isn't seating right, leading to the vibration.

I don't know if this model has "anti-squeal" shims or not (a 'squeal' being a soprano version of a groan) , but the mechanics should check if they are all there, as one may have been missed during assembly at the factory. They are fitted in the place Thermo highlights, between caliper's piston and pad's back plate. Often made of a soft-ish metal.
BTW, the busses in Leeds do this, and the noise goes right through you...

XJL Brakes Groan when stopping
I have a 2011 XJL supercharged with 1400 miles. My brakes have made the same groaning noise from day one. I totally agree with you that a $90K car should not make this noise. In fact it's a bit embarrissing when I have someone in the car. Took it in to Hoen Jag in Carlsbad, and the service Mgr. told me that it's just something inherit with this car. Basically I have to just live with it, nothing they can do. I was not happy with his answer, so I took it today to the only other dealer in San Diego. I'll let you know what the outcome is. The one thing I have noticed is that once the brakes warm up the noise is just slight or goes away completely. I thought I'd see more complaints about this on the forum, which leads me to believe that not all new XJ's have this issue.
