To be safe, I had a local shop change it and they used a battery saver.. you essentially plug it into the cigarette lighter, while you are swapping the batteries.
IF you want to do this yourself:
1. figure out how to disconnect the bulb in the trunk - it would drain the little "battery saver battery in about a few seconds.
2. use two lantern type 6 volt batteries in series, with the cigarette lighter socket adaptor and battery saver.. so that your trunk light will not drain it.. you might still get only a couple of minutes from these two lantern type batteries..
lighter recepticle does not have power to it when car is off.

You can easily connect a battery charger under the hood. The terminals are clearly illustrated in the owners manual. If I recall correctly, when you disconnect all power source, you will lose the windo auto up and down memory settings, as well as the moon roof auto open/close settings. I had this happen when disconnecting the battery to cause the EPB to go into calibration mode. Not a big deal, as the manual has instructions for re-programming the windows and moonroof. Easy-peasy.

The cigarette lighter is not powered by the car when off but you can plug in an external power plug via the cigarette lighter. This should keep the memory stuff alive.

Hi Club,

It's my understanding that if the ignition is on (engine not running), that the cigar(ette) lighter is powered. If the ignition is in P0 then power will not flow in either direction, this is why putting a trickle charger via the lighter socket is pointless.

Thanks I did not know that as the battery savers are generally plugged into the cigarette lighter.
So an under hood connection would be better.

I believe one of these will work plugged into the OBD2 slot
