High Mileage & Warranty

Hey Guys,
I just purchased a 2011 XJL with 78K miles on it. I've been reading on this forum and its making me kind of nervous. I know people typically post when bad stuff happens so I hope this isn't the "normal" experience. My question to the group is, what is high milage on an XJ? Anyone over 100K?
I've been looking at extended warranties but honestly Endurance and CarChex both seem kind of gimmicky in that they are HIGH pressure sales and BBB reviews are not great. Anyone have advice?

I have a Continental extended warranty (apparently its a "CPO extension") and so far i am pleased with it, but ive only had to use it once. My front right ride sensor needed replacement, and it covered most of it. There was an air suspension surcharge that i had to pay. I have 85k on mine, and i bought it in the low 60s, and while its not flawless, all the important stuff is going strong. 2 of the 3 sun shades arent working properly, but IMO that is minimal. As long as your waterpump was taken care of at some point, and its been properly maintained, i think you will have a good experience with the XJ.

Hank Scorpio,
There is no such thing as a "CPO extension". By definition, a "warranty" is a written guarantee, issued to the purchaser of an article by its manufacturer, promising to repair or replace it if necessary within a specified period of time. The Jaguar New Car Warranty and Certified Pre Owned Warranty are backed by Jaguar; they do not issue any warranties beyond their CPO warranty.
The Jaguar dealer that sold you a ""CPO extension" really sold an extended service contract, not a warranty, because it is not backed by the Jaguar factory even though it may have been marketed on that Jaguar dealer's letterhead. That extended service contract is like an insurance policy underwritten by a third party unrelated to Jaguar, complete with exclusions, limitations, and deductibles.
Buyer beware! Read the fine print and don't rely on anything the salesperson tells you. Many of those contracts are intentionally vague and ambiguous so that the Administrator can weasel out of paying claims. Hopefully, you bought a good one.
Extended service contracts pay high commissions to the salesperson and are highly profitable for the insurer (Administrator). That's why these companies are in business. Sure, some buyers of extended service contracts have saved money with them, but most don't. And some place a dollar value in having peace of mind and not worrying about the high cost of repairs (hopefully). Others put the amount of the cost of that extended service contract in the bank to use in case of a repair and wind up with a cash balance.

I am not under any warranty coverage either. I am currently getting quotes for all the major service items that will eventually be needed on this car (timing chain + tensioners + guides, supercharger isolator spring, coolant tubes/ y-connector). I will likely also add in water pump replacement (as it is cheap to do during timing chain work) and tmap sensor (while supercharger is out). If all this work is astronomically expensive, I will trade in for a warrantied model (probably an XF). If it is < $7k, I will probably bite the bullet, because my XJ is awesome and fully loaded.
If you have a 2011 supercharged 5L, you will have an identical service list to mine. The supercharger isolator spring and timing chain work should only need doing once. The water pump and coolant tubes are probably every 40,000 miles (according to my mechanic).
Newer models (depending on model year) have less of these issues, but they are much more expensive to purchase. Let us know what you decide to do. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one figuring out the service costs on these earlier XJs.

Nope, I am thinking the same way my friend. I figured the timing chain is a ticking time bomb waiting to go off. I plan to do my own maintenance as far as fluid go and even plan to do the transmission. To me it sounds like the only thing that can really go wrong are the timing chain and water pumps. I dont have the super charger BUT I still love this call man.

Mine is at 142,000 and has been very reliable. It’s a daily driver for me. I bought it at 100,000 miles at a great price a few years back. My issues: sticky buttons (fixed myself with goo-gone), headliner coming down above the DS sunshade, and a squeaky window when I roll it up. All minor issues! I count my blessings everyday...
