Big Android Screen Upgrade to XJ
I have had it 3+ years in my 2014 XJR and no problems. I have the ability to add ANY Android App to the unit including Apple Car play and Android Auto (I have both installed). No problems at all? Not sure why it's not possible? It's not if you don't change the hardware for sure!
Now one problem that has recently come up with these aftermarket big screen installs is that ONLY the Merryway unit has the proper factory circuit boards installed in it. It's not well known but on the late model XJ's (X351) Jaguar actually runs cooling ducts to the back of the dashboard electronics using a dedicated duct and fan assembly. If you look there are two ducts. One puts air onto the back of the navigation screen and the other puts air flow to the back of the main instrument panel. Note this is NOT connected in ANY way to the cars AC/heating system.
Since I have the Merryway unit with the factory circuit boards installed I have 100% full factory function. Did not lose anything which you normally do with these aftermarket installs. Now the factory screen monitors the units temperature and when too hot signals this cooling fan to run. It's variable speed fan run on PWM. We are now seeing failures and screen drop outs on everything EXCEPT the Merryway units because they are getting too hot in the confined dash area they are installed in.
So as always do a LOT of research before you jump on the latest shiny thing. There is a HUGE difference in how they are integrated into your car and you DO NOT want to lose ANY of that!
I think the disaster going on now with the end of 2G and 3G service will be the biggest problem going forward. There will be ten's of millions of dead and obsolete units installed in just about any brand of car. It really is a huge mess and no good solution that I see yet? Think if you want that problem? Maybe just look for 5G units? I don't know of any for the XJ BUT I have not looked either.
