Insurance cost
Hello Everyone,
Newbie here in Dallas, TX. Sorry if this has been covered before. I searched but couldn't find anything specific to the new XJ.
I test drove a 2012 XJL last weekend and am working towards owning one of these marvelous machines.
I was wondering what you guys in the US and particularly TX are paying for insurance?
I've been with Farmers for 14 years - never made a claim - no accidents etc. Currently paying around 500 for 6 months on an 08 MB C350. Farmers want 1300 for 6 months for the XJ! I was surprised because they recently quoted me around 500 on a 2012 CLS.
Is this what I should expect? Anyone know of a friendlier insurance company?
Any help/advice greatly appreciated.
Cheers!

As you can see, there are all kinds of variable that go into the cost of insurance. You can't just say I pay X for six months.
To try to answer the OP's question, I will give the breakdown on my insurance through State Farm for the XJL I just purchased last week:
Liability (250/500/100) -------------$221
Collision ($1k deductible)-----------$159
Comprehensive (No deductible) ------$96
Uninsured Motor Vehicle (100/300)---$81
Car Rental/Travel Expenses--------- $16
Total For Six Months:-------------$573
The above price includes discounts for being accident-free for 10 years as well as a multi-car discount for having more than one car insured through State Farm.
EDIT: Just to be clear, I'm not suggesting that everyone provide a line-by-line breakdown of their insurance costs; I was providing mine to show that merely stating $X/6mo is pretty meaningless without also stating what coverages one has. At the very least, people should include what their liability limits are in addition to their deductibles.

Interesting to a UK motorist how you get a much fuller breakdown of the insurance than we do here in the UK.
I can't help thinking that Brainstorm's MB insurance is cheap because the car is now 4 years old, and hence worth a lot less and can therefore be "written off" if necessary (after an accident), by the insurer at much lower cost than a new 2012 XJ saloon. I would think the 3rd party insurance, (liability) would be about the same on both cars.

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions. All very interesting.
The point about needing more information to compare apples to apples is well taken (thanks MMOB). Thanks also to another_geek who also provided detailed numbers. I'm at work so don't have all the details of my coverage to hand but liability is 100/300/100 and deductible 1000. I'll find the rest and post later.
Ozy, I also have multiple cars (2) and my house with Farmers.
I think Farmers gets excited when it comes to collision repair costs. I recently got a quote on an Aston Martin Vantage that was reasonable until the collision got factored in and then it rocketed to over 2000 for 6 months.
What I have seen so far suggests that I could do better. I'll definitely shop around.
Finally to Fraser from Crewe in the UK. I'm a British ex-pat living over here so I am well versed in the differences between UK and US insurance. It was a bit of a shock the first year I was here. The value of the car is a factor but not as big as you would think. I got a quote on a 2012 CLS roughly same value as the XJ and the cost was not much more than my current 08 c class. By the way I'm Cheshire born and bred. Born in Runcorn and grew up around Weaverham and Northwich.
Please keep the suggestions and info coming. I guess this thread may be of interest to others?
Thanks again. Cheers!!!!!!!

Before we were married, I had State Farm for my house and car. my wife had Mercury for her car and mobile home. After marriage, I got quotes from both with identical coverage for both cars and house. Mercury was far less than SF, and they would not budge one bit. So Mercury it is. I also now have earthquake coverage which we got thru the local insurance company.
(It's Geovera for those in quake country who may be interested and farrrr less than the state sponsered coverage.)

Other thing I forgot to mention is the XJ is built of aluminium and is more expensive to repair than steel-bodied cars. Here in the UK there are very few body shops trained up to do it. So a more direct comparison would be with the Audi A8, although this uses a different construction technique. The new Audi TT which is part aluminium monocoque like the XJ is even closer, but a lot less to buy new.
Anyway, hope you can afford the new amount needed. I wouldn't want to pass up the chance of having one of these cars. It was why I changed from a Rover 75 to my current X350 series XJ6 Sport; if I didn't do it at the time, the opportunity might not come again !

Found this pdf on the new Audi TT body shell. A lot of commonality of techniques with Jaguar - self piercing rivets, glues etc. Interesting bit on how they insulate the steel panels from the aluminium ones.
A very technically advanced piece of body engineering, just like the XJ. I wonder if it also suffers from filiform corrosion !!

Update to this thread -
Got my renewal notice in the mail today and my rate dropped significantly even though it was low already. Went from $397/6 months to $262/6 months for the Jag with no change in coverage levels. Not sure why, but not complaining. Total for all 3 cars is now only $561 (from $852 previously).
I'd been shopping around because I knew it was time to renew but no one seems to be able to come close to what Mercury is offering me.

another_geek - Wow... 262 is very low. I see earlier in the thread that you have made claims with no issues. I guess this means you would recommend them? There are various horror story reviews here and there on the interweb but that seems to be the case for every insurance company.
Do you have homeowners with them also?

Yes, I would recommend Mercury. My parents and my brother have been customers also for many years. I do have a homeowners policy with them for the multi-policy discount. Just be aware that for claims, Mercury does not have adjusters that come to you as some other insurance companies do. Instead, you to drop your car off at your favorite repair shop and they work directly with the shop. A little hands off, but not difficult to work with at all. Just depends on what you are looking for.

Are these really low prices per month or every 6 months? I'm paying a little under $1200 for 6 months on an XJ SWB and am looking at 1350 for an XJL SC . Clean driving record, 32 years old. These are the lowest I could find, most wanted between $2500 and $4000 for 6 months!
I'm in Los Angeles, CA.

I've shopped around and no other insurance company has come close to matching what I currently have so I've stuck with them. Every renewal for the last 4-5 years, the cost has dropped another $100-$200/6 mths. I'm not complaining
