Default Jaguar X351 vs Mercedes CL (215 or 216)

Obviously, everyone here, myself included, are very impressed with the X351, toilet paper quality coolant pipes not withstanding...

Prior to switching over to Jaguar (XJS is next...) I had some great experiences with Mercedes S class and CL.

My question is do any of you X351 owners also own a Mercedes CL class - either a 215 (2000 - 2006) or 216 (2007 - 2013) chassis CL - and can provide feedback on which you prefer and how the cars differ from an X351, as I have found the X351 offers an extremely rare combination of automotive experiences, much like the CL. In short, I would like to find out which you think has better qualities and where... (I'm not talking about the much cheaper CLS).

Also do any of you also own an XJS, and how does that compare with an X351...?

Thanks !

Not many CL owners then...!!

It is a shame, the CL is an amazing car also... but is the X351 even better?

I am not a Mercedes fan. Therefore, have ever owned one. I have had two XJS's. The first was a 78 HE (I Think) that was a daily driver for four years. I put some 95k miles on it and traded it for a Porsche 928. Big mistake!! The second was a 94 6.0L convertible which I bought in 2018 as a toy. I sold it in the fall of 22 as it was becoming too difficult for me to get in and out. The main thing to remember any XJS you buy will be at least 28 years old. If you are to get one, make sure all of the maintenance is up to date. Also if you are to get a 6.0L parts may be a problem. Good luck!

Many thanks, Ralphwg - much appreciated. Interesting that you thought trading the XJS for a 928 was a mistake - I would tend to agree with you but I am still an XJS virgin... and have never owned a 928 either. Do tell more ! And I agree that the maintenance must be completely up to date...

When I traded the XJS for the 928 on the strong recommendation from a friend along with a spirited test drive the XJS had 95K miles on the clock and was running well after four years of daily use in the Chicago area. The 928 on the other hand started to fail after 3 years and 60K miles in the same location. Was costing about $1000 a month to replace wornout broken parts to keep it on the road. Also the electronics liked to do strange things such as locking the doors with the keys inside the car, etc.
