Default Key Fob

I have a 2013 Jag XJL with only one key fob. I went to the Jag dealer and they gave me a rough cost of about $350 for the fob and another $150 to program it to my car. Is there any other options less expensive?

If you check eBay they seem to be going for about $100. One of mine had the rubber coming off, so I went ahead and removed it and cleaned it with "Goof Off". Then I glued it back on with some speaker glue I have laying around from when I repaired a few speakers. It stays tacky and pliable. I did check eBay first though. Even at $100 I thought I would try to repair mine first. I've got my fingers crossed it will hold. I imagine I would just buy one from eBay and let the dealer program it if I was in your situation. I don't mind spending money but 5 bucks is 5 bucks. Or is that 500 bucks is 500 bucks?

Check ebay for jaguar xj 2013-2015 keyfob, but u will need to go to the dealer with both new and old fobs to get programmed to your XJ. I would buy an OEM version and they vary in price but are usually under 50 to 100 dollars.

Buyer Beware! A Jaguar SmartKey fob becomes an "orphan" when it is separated from its parent - the original vehicle for which it was programmed. It can not be reprogrammed, unless it is first "divorced" from that original vehicle. If you buy a fob on eBay, be sure to get a written, money back guarantee that is is reprogrammable.

If accurate, that's good to know. It'll keep you from wasting $100. Of course that locks you into paying the dealer $500. Is that information applicable to all years of the X351 so far? Or only 2013 and up?

You're NOT locked into buying from the dealer. Just be sure that the seller guarantees that it's programmable. Orphaned smartkeys can be cleared with the proper computer but the VIN of the parent might be needed. I'm also pretty sure that orphaned smartkeys apply to all Jaguar years and models from 2007-up that use proximity sensors to unlock the doors.

From the X150 (2007-up XK/XKR) Forum: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...attery-179830/

Hopefully, a Tech will chime in with the XJ details.

Well you got me looking harder. This seller gives you 30 days to find out if it will work. It's only $140. New in the package, could be a chinese knockoff, but if it works you could buy two or more and still save over a dealer.

Seller: yourkeylessremote (251995 transactions) 99.6% positive feedback

I'd post the link but I don't know if that's allowed. Don't want to get in trouble.

Just search for "new Jaguar smart key"

I would be wary of any tat coming from eBay. Even more so if its coming from China/HK.

Do you have the part number for this? I have the old style clamshell fobs and the rubber is loose on both of them - I'd love to find a new housing.

My XJ was delivered with the old clamshell fobs and Jaguar and at that time had a campaign where you could switch to the new smaller fobs. So you could keep your old style with the new style if you or your dealer would program the new and old fobs that you have at the same time all will work. I have 2 old and 2 new style fobs. If I let someone else use my XJ (wife) I have them use the old style fob and she never forgets to put it back in our key repository as it weighs a ton.
