Music Setting...

Music Setting...
On all my other cars, including my Jag F-Type, I have a small 32 Gb USB for music files. All of them remembers what song last played & starts there each & every time I start up the car. Example long song played was song XYZ #101 of #2000 total songs. Works great.
But in my wife's XJ, every time car starts, it reverts back to song ABC #1 of #2000. Minor detail, but very annoying, since I have to manually go to the music setting, punch the shuffle icon, then next song to get to a new song.
Is there a simple setting I need to toggle on or off to get it go back to last played song, instead of song #1, every time I start up vehicle?
Thanks,

NavyBlue, you may want to look at the settings. Now, I have a 2012 XJ, but I have a 16GB memory stick and it plays just like your F-type. I don't repeat songs for months on end and will pick up in the middle of a song where I turned the car off at. I don't know what setting it may be because honestly, when I got my car, that is how my stereo worked and it was how I wanted it. So, no need to go in and start playing with settings.

NavyBlue, unfortunately, I can relate to your woes. I've been fighting this in my 2017 XJL now for about a year and a half (since I purchased it as a CPO). I had exactly the same issues, however mine would also sometimes "hang" and then reboot itself. But the most exasperating part was starting the car and finding that the music on my USB flash drive went back to the first track (the track that started with a "1" in the title) and that it also took itself off of shuffle. My car has been back to the dealership multiple times for this and I will give them credit as they have shown a lot of patience in trying to fix the issue. To save you going through all the steps I tried, here is a list of what I tried:
1. Reformatted my USB to FAT. When that didn't work (which the dealership didn't think would help) I reformatted back to FAT32.
2. Tried 16GB, 32GB and 64GB USB thumb drives. I had the same problems with all the USB drives, regardless of the size. And also, these drives all worked perfectly in my 2013 Range Rover and my 2015 F Type. I also tried different lengths of USB's to eliminate any question of it possibly being a heat issue.
3. Purchased a 64GB Kingston drive as that is Jaguar's "official" USB (or so I was told) and tried that. No resolution there.
4. Re-coded all my songs to 256kbps as some were 320kbps.
5. Renamed every song to take out any wildcards in the song titles (question marks, brackets, etc.).
All of the above did absolutely nothing other than eliminate potential sources of the problem.
The dealership contacted Jaguar Technical and they weren't really any help until...another XJL was brought in in England with the same issue. Then they were able to actually see the problem and agreed that maybe it was a problem!. That was about 6 months ago and in the meantime I've had a tracker installed in my car by Jaguar to monitor my unit. On Tuesday, they uploaded a "patch" and it seems to have helped some. When I turn the car on now, it continues at the same point music wise as when it was shut down. However, it no longer shows the actual title of the song, just the album name and musician.
The car goes back to the dealership on Wednesday. The dealership has a WebEx with Jaguar in England to go over where things stand with this issue and figure out next steps.
So, there is a potential fix, although it isn't 100% yet.
I hope this helps and I'll update again once I get the car back from the dealership and see where things stand.

Is all of your music the same format, i.e. AAC, MP3, FLAC .... as well as the same bit rate? I found I could not mix formats on my USB stick, regardless of bit rate.
At least on early cars, the infotainment system is slow, awkward and faulty. "Shuffle" for example with a USB stick, "re-shuffles" after each song ends, so lots of repetition occurs. One of you math geniuses can probably calculate how many songs must be eventually played to get through the entire playlist
I'm giving up and getting a dedicated iPod for car music.

I checked my 2014 and it does pickup where it was when the car was shut off. So I can't say and I looked in settings but could find nothing about setting that either?
I did notice the song info is on the head unit display but only show track number on the instrument panel which is disappointing. I think it should mirror what the head unit displays?

This seems to be a random issue that only affects certain units. When I started searching for this issue, I found mention of it on a forum for XE owners.
When mine is working properly (it actually does happen occasionally for no apparent reason), it shows the title of the song on both the head unit display and the instrument panel display.
As far as setting go, I could find nothing that would fix this and neither did the dealership.

From the symptoms and the tests described above, I’d say this is not related to the USB key, but to the car which considers when it starts that a new key has been inserted while it should remember it was already inserted and in use.
I don’t have this problem, and if I remove the USB key while the car is off and insert it again a few days later the last track was memorized.
Thus the car seems to recognize the key via some handshake. I can imagine each key has a unique identifier and the car in some cases erase the memory it’s stored in.
Maybe another issue linked to low batteries?

I'm pretty sure I ruled out it being the USB thumbdrive by trying multiple units and different capacities. All the thumbdrives exhibited the same problem. Jaguar has acknowledged that it is a problem with the vehicle at this point, they just can't determine if it is software or hardware related. This problem has been happening since I first picked up the vehicle almost a year and half ago, so I don't believe it's the battery. Also, this is happening to multiple customers so the chances that all of us have low batteries on all different models seems a little low, but I could be wrong. It's definitely happened before!

After a quick search on internet I saw that many cars of many brands have the same issue.
Some brands seem to have found the solution via a patch software as early as 2012…
but of course these are very high end brands, which can afford to put some hours of an IT engineer on the topic:

I’m quite sure that some day Jaguar will be able to afford to do that also.

Hi,
On my y.2010 the playback from USB continues where it was left everytime, so it is not that it was not invented yet...
One thing come in my mind: Try to set label name for the pendrive you use. Not sure how system regonices the drive, but if its only the pendrive name and if its left empty: Unit do not know if the pendrive are same or not? Just a though...

Thanks for all the informative posts above.
Guess that it's a vehicle specific issue & not just my own car issue, as it's the all the exact same songs on same USB type, that works on ALL other car makes, including Jaguar, as the exact same songs & same USB brand in my F-Type works perfectly.
If they don't even have a simple fix for this very latest 2019 XJ, Makes me worry about their next coming all-electric XJ, if it ever comes back...

My car is at the dealership now. They have updated the software and the dealership is telling me that it did, in fact, fix the issue. It's having a couple of other minor things corrected at the same time, so I won't be picking it up until Monday.
I'll send an update as soon as I get the car back and post the software update number. I would hope that any dealership would then be able to request that update and upload it to your vehicle.

I got my car back from the dealership late last week. There were additional things that needed to be fixed, which added time and I wanted to wait a few days to see if the music "fix" continued to work.
The dealership, through Jaguar Engineering, did a software update that does seem to have fixed the issue. My 64GB USB thumbdrive now reads all the music on it (over 5,200 songs) and remains on the same song on a restart of the car. The only downside I've found is that it takes longer for the infotainment system to start. When I turn on the car, it takes longer for the initial screen to even start up. So, while I now have the music issue resolved, in the winter it's going to take longer to turn on my heated seats. Of course, I can always work around that by remote starting the car.
For any of you that want to see if you can get the same upgrade to the Infotainment software, it's S21A_21.10.6-676616
If anyone needs any additional information, just let me know!
