Engine numbers correspond to VIN numbers. The 9-digit number in your first photo is the last 9 digits of the 17-digit VIN number of the Jaguar it was installed in by the factory. You just have to figure out the first 8 characters.

This should help:

Good luck!

Thanks for this info but based on these charts the 9 digits i have here cant possibly be a vin. Using the charts that match what i think it is i cannot get anywhere close to an accurate decode.

This engine appears to be a 88-91 5.3 as it has a lip seal on the rear of crank. It also doesnt have the intakes that the 92 up engines have. The fuel system and ignition has the rubber connected injectors and magneti marelli ignition components. There is a rare possibility that it is a xjr-s 6.0 engine as it has a gm400 behind it but im not holding my breath. I guess im gonna have to wait untill i tear it down to know more unless anyone else has more info.

Welcome to the forums KewlKat75,

When I read your post yesterday, two thoughts crossed my mind:

1. absolute certainly it is NOT an X351 engine
2. it would have been rather helpful to at least mention the number of cylinders

Nevertheless, I like a challenge.

The engine number 8S78984SA indicates:

1. a 5.3 litre V12 (confirmed by the prefix 8S)
2. Standard Compression with Grade A pistons and liners (confirmed by the suffix SA)
3. the numeric string was sequential so it will be from the 90's

Knowing the donor vehicle model and ideally also the VIN would help you source parts more easily.

Graham

Oops i had no idea what a x351 was my bad, i did mention that i was pretty sure it was a 5.3 so that should give a guy a clue to how many cylinders it has.
i dont have any idea of vin, i bought it from a guys garage floor who's family member had gotten it from a salvage yard and he didnt even know that much about it.

What does Grade A pistons and liners mean exactly. Ive been scouring the web for all info i can get, but mu efforts havent been super fruitful.

Thanks, Ray

Ray,

You will get best advice from the V12 experts and they can be found in our XJS forum:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xjs-x27-32/

The VIN would have been helpful but XJS owning members know more than most about overhauling and maintaining the V12.

Good luck with your project.

Graham
