New to the forum - think of buying a used XJ or XJL
I'm new to the forum. Glad to see that it is so active.Need a little advice.
Been thinking of getting a 2014 or 2015 XJ or XJL . Have a few concerns.
I have seen a LOT of very negative owner reviews on Jags in general since I started researching them a few days ago. Is reliability as bad as some folks claim? I know this is a general question that probably depends on each owners experience, but curious what the forum thinks about reliability.
Secondly, since this will be a used Jag and much of the factory warranty will be used up, does Jaguar offer an extended warranty and if so, can somebody tell me roughly what it costs?
Not new to Jags, but new to the current technology. Have a '63 Series 1 E-type coupe and had an early 90's XJ6 that I really liked, but it rusted away!

Jaguar has a pretty good CPO warranty. I just bought mine with 1 year left on the CPO and negotiated to have it extended 2 more years or 100k, whatever comes first. I am dropping it off for annoyances (like window squeals and condensation in a tail light) next week, so i will see how that goes as far as the CPO. Any extended warranty, as far as i know, would be a third party one, nothing to do with Jaguar.
I couldnt speak on reliability quite yet, since it has only been a month, but the other forum veterans seem to love these, for the most part. One post has a member mentioning he just bought his 3rd XJ since 2010, so it cant be too bad. Fingers crossed anyway.

Check the Carfax and make sure the water pump has been replaced, usually around 36,000 miles, and you should be okay. I looked at one in Atlanta I liked a lot, low miles, low price but it had been hit on all four corners and the hood still didn't sit right. I passed and pulled the trigger on one in California. No hits water pump already replaced but higher price and higher miles. Mostly highway miles it looks to me. Runs like a top and really impresses me. I love it more everyday. I drove it for the first time in the rain this morning and lights and wipers worked flawlessly. I had a little fog and I memorized where the windshield heat was, so I was going to turn it on and found out I don't have it. Just a dummy plug where the switch should be. Oh well, guess you don't need it in the desert, but the air took care of it in just a few seconds anyway. I would say get the lowest miles and best condition in the colors you want. I wanted silver with a jet gray interior. I looked at black and white exteriors and ended up with gray with jet interior with the contrasting white piping on the seats. Beautiful.
Oh, and most people want the illumination package too.

Look around for one in the auctions you can fix up a bit, they go for 10-15k and most people kept them in good condition aesthetic wise, I found an incredible 2011 with a bad motor that looked brand new and then I had a 2016 sc motor installed that had 4 miles on it, Roughly in it 30k for a beautiful car that looks brand new, has carbon fiber and illumination and has a basically brand new motor. Now I only have to deal with the roof popping, it's driving me crazy. Other than that everything works perfectly and the car looks like a 60k + car easy. I also updated the lights, sills and added a spoiler with mina exhaust, and that makes a huge difference in appearance, Lots of looks and compliment and I rarely see another one. Drives like a beast and much more like a sports car than you'd think. I'd say go for it. It's a lot of car for the money.

new to jaguar here but bought a new 2016 XJL in March 2017 . ive got 6K miles on it so far and have had no issues except a rattle in the overhead switch panel for the sun roof. need to have that addressed next service. Beautiful car and great for road trips. I don't drive it that much in the city but travel Las Vegas to Denver and Las Vegas to Palm Springs a lot. which is where all the miles came from. comfortable and performance is amazing. mountain driving is a blast! It will not be outperformed by anything else on the road!

I would not. I own a 2011 XJ which I brought brand new. I've been plagued by electrical issues since I have owned it. Just out of warranty with only 53,000 miles and the car has experienced a major electrical and will only run in "limp mode". Every possible failure scrolls across the dashboard. Both a local repair shop and Jim Coleman Jaguar have looked at it and recommended I scrap it; regardless of how much money I spend on diagnostics, they can not promise I they can ever fix it. I give Jim Coleman credit for being honest with me.
Tried to complain to Jaguar CRC...only been ignored. It's a beautiful car and when it works it's great. However, Jaguar does not have the reliability to be considered as a legitimate option. I recommend you look for another brand.

For a 2016 or newer model, I assume this repair/replacement would be covered as part of the Elite Care warranty (within the 5 years/60k miles covered)?
