Default New XJ Owner with a few questions

Hi all!

Over the weekend I purchased a CPO 2016 XJ R-Sport with very low miles. Still has 19 months of warranty along with the CPO warranty. I have already made an appointment with the dealer's service department (not a good thing so soon) for what I believe should be minor issues, but I would like to reach out to you all for some advice . . . if any:

1.) I cannot get the incontrol to work. I think the most likely culprit is that the SIM card is still registered to the previous owner and either needs to be replaced or cleared. It was late by the time I left the dealership and the service department was gone which is why I'm going back. But, I have discovered a few things which I would like to know if it's normal. Firstly, it seems that more than half the time, the car is "reading sim" Is this normal? I had an audi A6 and the sim connection was rock solid. This car seems to be going in an out of sim connection. Have any of you experienced this and if so, what is the solution. Also, have any of you had any luck switching from the ATT SIM to a different brand? I have read on the F-Pace forum that people have had luck switching to freedompop. However, I believe the software on the XJ is slightly different and does not have the ability to change carriers.

2.) My parking aid sensors don't seem to work. When I go into reverse, it shows the back up camera and then on the right a drawing of the car with the P and a red line through it. I've pressed the button in the ceiling and it blinks three times and then nothing. I think there is a problem with it. Wondering if this is a known issue with an easy fix.

3.) This next one has been covered extensively, but from what I can tell hasn't been brought up on the forums in a couple of years. Is there any way to permanently disable the eco start? Being a 2016, my vehicle doesn't have the small battery to disconnect. I did read that if I keep the car in dynamic mode, it won't engage. Anyway, just curious.

Anyway, I'm hoping that these issues are it. Thanks in advance for any help!

Huck, I will help you with what I can.

1) From the sounds of things, you need to get a new SIM card to make things work right. But, not being really familiar with the system (my car did not come with that feature since it is a 2012), it could be something else. But ,the dealership should be able to help you out.
2) What the system is telling you is that one of the parking sensor is not being seen by the computer. What you can try doing is getting someone else to sit in the car and have them start it and put it in REVERSE while they keep their foot on the brakes. You can then run your ear next to each of the 8 parking sensors (4 on the back, 4 on the front). You should hear a faint chirp/squeal coming from the sensor. If one is not making the squeal, that sensor is bad. If they all are not making any noise, then you most likely have a computer issue or for some reason. If this is the case, I would first check fuse F3 in the rear fuse box. This supplies a signal to the computer to say the car is backing up (atleast for my 2012). After that, you may have an issue with relay R5 in the same box. These would be a few things to check before going to the dealership. I would also do the idiot check of making sure that the back-up lights are coming on when the car is in reverse. Out of curiosity, is your passenger mirror dipping when you put the car in reverse. If so, then we know that the relay is good. If it is not, ensure that this feature is turned on inside the instrument cluster. If it still is not dipping, then there is a bigger issue than just your parking system. If this is the case, then best to let the dealership fix things.
3) this is something that has been brought up many times and I believe that there is a "fix" for this. You will have to do some looking as my car does not have this feature, so, I have not followed this thread really close. One bit of caution that I will toss your way (take this for what it is worth), the ECO feature is part of what the car was certified to have to meet the emissions/MPG standards. If you force this system off, then you are modifying the car from what the manufacturer made and depending on your dealership, they have the option to void your warrantee. How much do you trust your dealership? Once it is outside of the warrantee, then you have no worry then unless you live somewhere that is super strict with emissions (even then, I doubt they would see something like that).

Chris:

Thanks for the response. I'll talk to the dealer about the sim.

Regarding the parking sensor, I will try what yo mentioned. To answer your question, Yes, passenger side mirror dips when I reverse. When driving regular, the side assist works as well. I don't know if those are the same sensors. And one time, when backing up, the car did beep when there was cross traffic behind me. So, I think the system is working. I'll check the fuse you mention. I'll also check the reverse lights

About the eco start/stop, my previous car had this feature, but you could turn it off. I understand it's an emissions thing, but figured it was up to the driver if they wanted "better" emissions. Then again, Sport mode kind of defeats the emissions/mpg thing as well.

Thanks again,
Eric. . .

Huck, you can turn off the ECO start stop during a drive any time you want. You should just have to touch the ECO button and this will disable it. The issue comes when you turn the car off. The next time you start the car, the ECO function will be enabled again. So, if you want it off, you will have to push the button again. A bit of a PITA, but that is the easy answer to disable it.

Here is a thread about it. I stay in dynamic mode and it does not prevent star/stop from engaging. I have not found a configuration to stop it.

How I did it for a 2016 XJ...
Remove the trunk floor exposing the battery, spare, etc.
At the back end (towards front of car) of the battery is a thin, rectangular, silver module attached to a bracket. Several wired plugs are attached to the face of this module. The small black plug closest to you, with the SMALL GAUGE colored wires, can be unplugged. Secure this disconnected plug.
When you start the car, after about 30 secs., the "ECO OFF" light will illuminate in your dash.
No more stop/start, and no problems for me so far! Let me know if this works for you too, or if you notice any other issues...
Good luck!
