Power steering pump

Yes
I had the rack refurbed. Profesionaly. Changed the oil bootle with the filter. No difference. Still the revs on idle fluctuate . And more so, like in a thread I read on this forum, sometimes under braking, steering wheel jitters. Diferent speeds. Different moments. And more, on wavy tarmac, it’s behaving funny. Like the steering wheel is going in one direction and immediately in the other direction. For 1-2 cm of steering wheel move. And sometimes ….. just like I need to compensate from wheel being on flat surface . Changed lower arm, upper arm, sway bushings, linkage, pivot, banana arm. Still the same. Because of the revs fluctuating on idle while Turing the steering wheel…… next ideea…. The pump. So….someone? Ideas? Same problem? Ps: balanced wheels , steering angle …. All done also on
Have you tryed to bleed the system?
Best way i have found to bleed power steering have been this method:
- Raise both front wheels up
- Check that resevoir have enough oil
- With engine running turn steering slowly(!) end to end 2-4 times. (until no bubbles appear on oil)

It may be the steering rack sensor. I'm presuming that the rpm drops as the wheel is turned?
The sensor feeds a signal to the ECM that increases fuel flow, and maintains a constant idle, as demand on the pump increases.
A good scan tool will give you a code related to that sensor, and it may throw a CEL.

Answer
about the question I asked…… about the steering pump….. symptoms I described are without braking. Sudden loss of direction on wavy tarmac and sudden moves ,1..2 cm steering wheel moving

danu99,
With respect, there are hundreds of OBDII scanners on the market. They range from a few $, and top out in the $$$. Your choice. I use the Icarsoft, my choice.
You didn't answer my question: Does the RPM dip when steering angle is applied with the car at idle?

About the scaner, I was curious if all can scan the computer for error s . I had other cars that didn’t work so well with random scanners

Wombat is giving you great advice and I want to add if you are serious and want to DIY your repairs. I would get and install the factory manuals?
JTIS-Shop manual
JEPC-Parts catalog. We now have a great bit of software called J-PART that allows us to use JEPC without Flash Player as that has been removed from most computers.
These are free on the forum and yes it will take some work to set them up and get them working as things have changed a LOT since they were released.
To show you the power of J-Part here is a diagram showing the steering rack.
Note the red circle as that's the rack transducer Wombat is talking about. Now again Jaguar does ALL their parts by using the last 6 digits of your VIN (You did not post this so I can't be sure of what part number your car needs?)
I do find part number XR830017 but you MUST check that this is correct for your VIN!
Next you want to also check this part number with a current Jaguar parts system This is simple to do as it may have been superseded? Any of the on line factory parts sellers can do this.
Now it looks like your in luck as that part number is listed for all XJ's from 2004-2019 both V-8 and V-6 cars. But wow right at $500!
I think used would be fine as your problem is very odd and unusual. I don't think I have ever seen a bad rack sensor yet?

I will also do a clip with the steering wheel problem to post here for all. Next week will swap pump and maybe check the sensor until spare comes. Thanks again guys.

Guys….. 2 questions for you
1. how to upload video? I took the steps with attached video…. Selected…. Upload…. And doesn’t appear in post
2. the jittery steering….. could be from bad strut mounts? Top part of the strut that helps with the rotation when steering? And the foam part that cushions every thing? After replacing the upper arm, I still hear sometimes a noise while starting to turn the steering. Noise is from just under the bonnet, but it’s elusive. Not all moves make noises. So….. could that TOP part of the strut, strut mount, have a large play in it and can’t hold the strut straight under moving the wheel or unde road surface not good?
thx. Thing this week will change the pump . I’ll keep posting info
