Default Rear sun blind not working and thumping sound

Hi folks,

I bought my 2010 xJ from by brother in law who never used the sun roof or blinds. The recall sunroof items show as being fixed on one of the service records, however that was a couple of years ago.

When I picked the car up the sun roof and blinds would not operate at all however, when is em over, checked and reinserted the fuse the sun roof and blinds opened fine and the fronts work perfectly.

The rear blind opened smoothly no problem, however when it got to the fully open position, it then made a loud knocking noise for about 5 seconds before it stopped completely (in the open position).

Now every time the rear blind button is pressed the knocking sound is heard and no movement at all.

I did take it in to Stratstone in Stoke on Trent however after parting with £130 they said it could be he rails, the motor or the blind, we're not sure so you are looking at £600 plus labour and we can't guarantee it will sort it out or not.

For a sun blind, I thought this was ridiculous as basically they hadn't found the actual problem.

As I stated before. The front blind and sun roof work fine, win no issues at all.

Any ideas folks?

Well have you taken it apart to see what's wrong?

Either that or pay the 600 GBP.
Any warranty left?

I would suggest, that due to lack of use by your brother-in-law, the rear screen sunblind doesn't know if it is open or closed. If it were mine I would "manhandle" it to encourage it to open, and help it get into the fully "up" position, and then help it go down to the closed position. Essentially you have nothing to lose before spending big money to correct the problem if you think it is worthwhile (do you really have that much sunshine in Staffordshire to warrant fixing fix it?).

i did think that it could be a sensor issue, but i would have thought Stratstone would have confirmed this either way however their conclusion was somewhat vague to say the least.

I wold not in ANY way force the shade!!

If you want to make it worse just start getting rough with expensive interior parts.

Take it to a dealer.

Finally got sorted. Thanks to the great guys at XJK in Newcastle Staffs. It appears the control module in the front sunroof motor was not communicating with the rear motor. The result being the rear sun blind motor didn't know when to stop turning, hence the knocking sound. Motor now replaced it works perfectly.

incidentally, Stratstone Jaguar quoted replacing virtually everything else bar the from motor with no guarantee it would work. The blind and tracks etc were not at fault at all, so I am really glad I didn't let the Jaguar dealer fix the car.

if anyone who has a Jaguar is looking for a great Independent specialist, I recommend XJK Ltd in Newcastle under Lyme.
