Default Replacement windshield

My windshield on my 2011 XJL got three deep scratches (windshield wiper blew off in a bad storm). Liberty Mutual will replace it for a $100 deductible at Safelite. But…they will only pay for an aftermarket windshield. If I want OEM they want another $600. Does it matter? Am I making a mistake not fighting for a factory original replacement?

When I got mine replaced they said only the factory Pilkington glass was available. Glad to hear there is an aftermarket choice.
Be sure and get the correct windshield because there are several. Heated, rain sensing and maybe heated wiper rest?

Also my toll tag had to be replaced. I only mention this because Safelite just stuck the old one back on and since it was not working it looked like I was running all the tolls. Since they also take pictures of your rear tag they still sent me the tolls. I have had just about all the glass guys say they can save it so it works again. But be prepared to replace it. They don't make them to be reusable on purpose.

I have used aftermarket glass with no problems in all my previous cars with no problems.
Don't think it would be any different for a Jaguar?

I had mine replaced a couple of years ago. I use USAA and they sent out Safelite. There was a small chip at the base of the scree, one of those that you would never notice....then you can't see anything else.

Anyway, Safelite determined that due to the position of the chip, it was beyond repair. They replaced it with an OEM screen, all at zero cost to me.

Liberty Mutual has a full subcontract with Safelite. They won’t even deal with you and refer you to Safelite. The Safelite rep said I could get an OEM for an additional $630.

My windshield got cracked by a tire tread kicked up from a car ahead and was replaced by my insurance Chubb at no cost to me. But the windshield was ordered through my dealer and installed by an installer with XJ experience who is independent but the charges to Chubb were handled by Safelite. BTW they told me that only OEMs are available as the market for a non OEM glass company make the windshield too few vehicles to be profitable. Also, as stated by Clubairth1 there are several variations o0f the windshield based on the accessory level..

Just to add. When Safelite first came out he had the windshield but there were 2 trim pieces on the sides of the windshield that did not come with the aftermarket version. The installer contacted me to say Factory was the only option. Insurance did cover the added cost because the aftermarket was not a direct swap so required an OEM replacement.

I am prepared to waste my time today. I’ve talked to them twice now and figure they will see for themselves if it doesn’t fit.

There are no aftermarket windshields for XJ models, and it's a scam to tell you to pay the difference. Note that although they're all the same size, there are several different versions with varying designs around the rear view mirror. The correct design depends on the options on your car, such as auto-dim headlights, so the sensors aren't blocked. Your VIN is required to get the correct windshield.

Ask me how I know. Safelite ordered the wrong windshield and I'm scheduled to have the correct one installed next week. My cost is $250, my Comprehensive deductible. Plus the increase in next year's premium, of course.

I am hoping they ordered the correct OEM. Fingers crossed.

I had this installed last month on my 2011 XJL SC. It’s great and not OEM.

I'm just the messenger, simply reporting what Safelite told me. They're scheduled to replace my windshield tomorrow with the correct OEM windshield, hopefully.

Maybe you got the last one.

New OEM Jaguar windshield replaced today. Note the comment at the bottom of the invoice: "OE dealer part only available part". I suspect that's because of the rain sensor.

The invoice:

My car is at Safelite in Norwood, Ma. I confirmed with them that they ordered the correct heating windshield with the near invisible squiggly lines heating elements. I'm super OCD, I proactively remove the wipers, cowl, A pillar Trim, Mirror casing, rain sensor, and toll sensor cover? I hope they don't give me a hard time, I don't trust people taking apart trim pieces as they usually rush the job and break things, to simply cover up and hide the broken clips with some glue, so not taking chances. He told me that the new windshield came with the exterior black chrome trim pieces, or maybe an aftermarket solution to not having to put those on since they tend to be brittle. I wont know it its aftermarket till I pick it up. I hope that the heated ones are OE. But after a while aftermarkets pick up the slack when OEs don't want to offer them any longer. Fingers crossed. I like the Jaguar stamp and not some generic name on the parts. They did not give me an OE option, but I did not ask either.

Will report back later today. I hope they install the gel pad on the rain sensor, most places they leave this out and the functions fails to operate properly.

i dont think installing an aftermarket windshield is a big problem, as long as all functions work properly. The beauty is if you have the electric headed windshield, i dont think they have an aftermarket version, so they're forced to use OEM.

As mentioned, the OE was installed. Success, I get my Jaguar stamping. Insurance premiums on the other hand will likely soar. This is one expensive window. Only disappointing part was that it appears they reused the gel pad on the rain sensor. Half is adhered and half has air under it. I might have to redo it under my own expense. Anyone know they part number? I see some universal ones on eBay but rather do the OE size. Also the outer shinny trim on the A pillars did come with the window and all looks original. I hope the heating element works as intended. I didn’t hear a complaint for the missing parts they just wanted to make sure I had them.
