Replacing Painted Mirror Caps with Chrome

Replacing Painted Mirror Caps with Chrome
Hi. I just purchased the Jaguar Chrome Caps for my 2014 XJL. No instructions came with the parts. I looked for them online, and it seems that you "pull" on the mirrors to remove, so it exposes clips of the caps. I am concerned that the mirror may shatter. Anyone have experience exchanging their original painted caps for the Chrome ones?

Okay, I just gotta ask: What is the attraction with these chrome mirror covers? The reason I ask is that I traded in my 2012 XJL earlier this month for a 2014 and the new car had these chrome covers on them. Since the car is Lunar Grey, it sort of matches the car and looks okay, I suppose. I mean, I'm not going to take them off, but I certainly wouldn't have paid extra for them. My 2012 was Claret and I think the chrome would have looked worse on it. Taste is subjective and people like what they like, I just don't get chrome mirrors, I guess.

That being said, my 2006 XJ Vanden Plas had those chrome mirrors and I didn't throw a fit over them!

I think it is great that people would spend time helping a stranger. You members are very kind to help me with this request. As far as the comment about liking the chrome, I don't know if I have offended people with my taste. I just thought they looked nice. I've owned Jaguars for 12 years, I am not old, and I thought I had good taste in automobiles.

What's funny is that that comment about Jags being (or not being) more youthful these days was posted immediately after my post about not liking chrome mirrors. I wasn't sure if the poster was commenting about your lack of taste for liking chrome mirrors or my lack of taste for not liking them, lol!

So I spoke to my service tech and he said that they don't pop off the glass, but they start by "lifting" up the front corner of the cover and the rest comes off. However, that can break one of the plastic pins on the cover. That's the best I can do, good luck. Personally I would switch my covers if I could find some in carbon fiber.

Not to worry

Yes it is great, and BTW, taste is what this is all about. Some like chrome and some don't. Like some like black and some like white. All taste. I am also a musician as well as a businessman, and as such the music is art and not everybody likes U2, and I have been listening to sinatra since I was 10 years old, as well as the Stones. All art....and Chrome is a part of art, just like painting the brakes glossy black vs. red. TASTE.
Enjoy the changes to the wheels and if "you like it" go with it.

I didn't mean to offend. I do think the look is distracting, though. It does seem like an easy mod--I hope the OP is able to pull it off (literally) without breaking anything!

One thing I have learned over many years, is to not act immediately on car mods (and I've done hundreds of them), but to sit on an idea for a while before acting upon it. It is amazing how many "must have now" ideas turn into "gee, in retrospect, I'm glad I didn't do that" ideas. Just saying.
