So scottrader as you use your door all the time, why not deactivate the soft close by unplugging the bypass connection in the trunk that they connect in the PDI? I would and the other doors are used infrequently so they may never be a problem. IMHO
I never actually cared about the soft close doors, until i had to put my sleeping child in the car seat and close the door without waking him up, it was at that point i appreciated them.

That I can appreciate!! is the soft close available on other models or just the XJL ? I think they added this feature to keep with the BMW 7 series and the Merc S Class.

its on all XJ's.....only. Not available on the SUV's, or other vehicles
In my 2019 XJ50 the soft close in the driver's door was not working
I was quite upset as I just bought the car a few days ago and I spook with the previous owner ( just one owner ) he saw that issue right when he bought the car new and he asked in Jaguar why was not working and one of the guys in Jaguar told him that it is normal, as the driver you can easely close the door which is not the same for the 3 other doors where you must stop the car and close them well your self
but I have the soft close in the Maserati and all doors have soft close, on my previous CLS or the Phaeton etc all doors had soft close, and I thought maybe Jaguar spare some money on this, who knows
after reading this topic, I just went a few minutes ago to the trunk where the small fuse box is on the side...
and what I found ??
this
Just connect the grey connectors and that is it
all doors including the drivers door work with soft close

Yes that is part of the pre-purchase inspection that the dealer missed when the car was new. All XJ's were shipped with the drivers soft close door disconnected. Whoever sold the car did not follow Jaguar's instructions to their dealers.

Just yesterday I had noticed that all of a sudden left side rear door won't soft close anymore. I can manually close it and lock it just fine but it's just that it won't soft close at all. Any ideas as to what I can try doing from my end before taking it to a mechanic?
Yes take a look at my repair. My soft close actuator broke a plastic gear like part inside. The great part is this is common on the LR side so many threads about it and the aftermarket actually makes a metal replacement gear now!
A great upgrade and I am sure this gear device will NOT break again!
I got so mixed up I thought I bought a 2013 XJL but it's a 2014 (says so in my signature), and I just tried the soft-close feature and it works on all the doors! Awesome! I had no idea when I took delivery three weeks ago, then I read it on the window sticker and didn't know what it meant, then found my way to this thread. Super cool!
If you like that you should consider installing the after market powered trunk closer? Something I think Jaguar should have included from the factory but they did not. Well they did but it ONLY does that using the trunk buttons. Then you can both open and close the trunk multiple ways. You now have 3 ways to open/close the trunk. The trunk buttons, the dash button and with the remote key FOB. Not very expensive and easy to install.
It's a real handy feature!

I think it's fine to just be able to close the trunk using the button there. The other ways allow me to open the trunk but not close it, is that the idea?

Interesting. The doors close so easily on my XJL that if I carefully put the door up to the striker to let the soft close take over, the soft close actuators make even more noise then if I had just closed the door gently all the way.

No. The aftermarket trunk (boot) module that I have enables my Smartkey to open and close the trunk lid by pushing the trunk button on the Smartkey. It also adds that close feature to the trunk button on the dashboard. It's what the factory forgot.
See: Remote Trunk Close Module
There it is in trunk right side fuse box. This connector was unplugged and the driver's door soft close didn't work. I connected the connector and now all is well.

I had the same. The poor previous owner drove the car for 3 years without the feature. I plugged it in without a month after seeing posts online.
They also had the tow hook in the back that is reverse thread and supposed to be removed at the same time the soft close is connected. Doh.
