Old Tiger, if you reduce the air in the rear suspension, it is going to cause the rear of the car to sag and start riding lower, which can have other issues. Now, you can possibly have the magnetic shocks be softened up a little bit, but you would need to get the ride system adjusted to do that. But, if you do that, then the car is going to ride softer all the time unless you turn on the dynamic mode. Then it will stiffen the suspension up significantly.

Your tires may be the problem. What size, brand and model are on your XJ? If they're 20" Ultra High Performance Summer tires, they'll ride a bit stiffer than an All Season tire. Ride comfort varies between brands.
Also, what air pressure are you running in your tires? If it's too high, the ride quality will suffer. You can't rely on the Tire Pressure Monitoring System because the warning light comes on only when the pressure is too low! It doesn't warn you if the pressure is too high! You should use a digital tire pressure gauge in the morning when the tires are cold to measure the air pressure in each tire. Write those numbers down and compare them to the recommended front and rear pressures located on the sticker on the driver's side door jamb. Adjust your tire pressures to conform to that sticker.
After you've corrected the tire pressures, take your car for a drive around town. Let us know if that made any difference.
When did you buy your XJ and how many miles does it have now? Did it always ride hard around town?

Im interested in this too. I was planning to just change out all my shocks eventually, but it would be preferred/ cheaper to try adjusting them through some “setting” first. I’ve used several types of tires and they do help, but mostly at higher speeds. The lower speed town driving could use some softening.

I replaced my shocks at approximately 96k as my XJ it was riding like a truck. I used OEM (Bilstien) on the front and Bolstean ordered from Rock Auto on the rear. The ride is as good to better than new. The reason I used OEM front is that one shock went bad and it was replaced under the extended warranty and wanting as it failed and gave a code to replace matched repair I paid for the one not under warranty..

Mark as the warranty was only going to replace the bad right shock with 96k on it and the other front left shock has 96k, also, but no fail code the wear was the same so like a tire that gets a puncture and cannot be repaired and it is worn I would replace both tires on the same axel. Got it?
