Question Spray Foam in engine bay?????

Hey all,
So I've been looking at used XJLs recently and I came across one that I fell in love with (cosmetically), but found a small issue that I was curious about. In the engine bay, to the left of the block near the firewall, there's some spray foam. I'm only able to inspect online at the moment because I don't want to fly all the way out to Jacksonville, FL for a car that I might buy. I only travel to purchase when I'm 99% sure the car is what I want. I asked the salesperson to talk with the service manager about it and see why its there - he said that it was stock sound dampening...
Now, I'm not a genius by any means, but I've looked at over 1000 pictures of XJL engine bays over the last couple months and have yet to see anything like this on any of them. I also know that sound dampening materials are either panels or formed pieces rather than spray foam...
I'm curious to see if anyone on here might know WHY someone would put foam specifically in that area - like is there a tube or something located there that someone patched stupidly. I know it's probably something that I would need to have removed and replaced, but I want to know what kind of repair I'm looking at.

Any help would be appreciated!

Rokksteddy, I have the same setup. The only things that are in that area are some electrical wires. So, why someone would put foam there is beyond me. Unless this car has some option that you just have to have, I would tell you to move on. If you are fairly dead set on getting the car, then I would say to spend $400 and have an inspection done on the car at some third party location. Talk with the person doing the PPI and explain your worries. They will give you an explanation of what is going on. If the site you are looking to buy from is the one telling you who to get the inspection done by, WARNING!!!!!!. I just had my own run in with a less than forth-right company and since I am well versed in the cars, told them where to pack the car they were going to screw me with. The salesman was a bit taken back that I had more information on the car than they were admitting to.

There are lots of these cars out there. Keep looking and see what you can find. If the price seems to good to be true, IT IS!!!!!!.

that’s not foam it’s a protective cover that dries out and comes apart showing the material inside absolutely nothing to worry about

Agree. The sound insulator comes apart like this. Inside of insulator are yellowish fabric, what you see in picture. (its not sprayfoam)
I fixed mine with few pieces of Gorilla tape.

Still a good idea to get an inspection done overall. A third party mechanic is going to tell you everything you're going to want to know about the vehicle that the dealer is not as well as nitpick any cosmetic damage with pictures when all you'll hear from the sales person is "it looks great!" I recently had an inspection done on a Jaguar out of state I was dead set on buying, had the plane ticket purchased and everything but had to back out of it after getting the inspection results.

Well - called the salesperson to get video of it running and before she sent it, she let me know that the engine knocks and there's an oil leak...back to the search.

The AJ133 engines can be a bit noisy. Also the cam covers can weep a bit of oil on older models. Mine does and it's getting new gaskets. The seals on the vacuum pump can drip oil on older ones too. Neither is a terrible job but yes...any oil leak needs proper investigation

Also note that the SC snout clunking can also cause similar noises and that's not a big or expensive repair.
But I think you were wise to move on and look for a better car.

They also have the wrong coolant in the car (green instead of orange). I would agree on staying away from this one.

I too have this same issue on my 2011 5.0. I am wondering if it possible to replace this part because it is unsightly and makes a mess in the bay. I see part number C2D49523 available but I’m not sure if this is the same part and I would love to know if anyone has replaced it and how difficult it is to do. Many thanks!

They are on EBay with pictures and I think you do have the right part number?
Engine Compartment Insulation Pad

Looks correct too?

Looking at where it is I wonder how hard it's going to be to replace this? It's tight in the engine bay and this looks to extend down past the engine. Just no room in there to work??

Good find on that part number!
