Sunroof Shade
#41
It's most likely a battery issue
Hi there. Looking for help. Just purchased a 2012 Jag XJ and I am having the sunroof shade issue stated in this thread. I have read through each one and tried the button reset procedure and even the hand in the shade procedure to no avail. Still a gap! I have chosen to try to ignore it but it is annoying as heck.....any help?!?!?!
I've since sold the xj but the repair for the rear sunshade proofed very expensive. The sunshade is like that because your battery has at some point gone flat. I would suggest that you reset the battery and then try holding down the buttons, perceiver with this, don't try the hand in the sunshade thing, it will proove expensive.

May not be related, but just bought a 2012 XJ super sport and the front shade wasn't working as well as the auto folding mirrors.
The drivers mirror seamed loose and wouldn't catch on a detent.
I manually tried folding the mirrors in by holding the two switches down and the passenger side fold in. cycled them a couple times, heard a click on the drivers side and now both not work
as well as the front shade. Coincidence or are they somehow tied together?

So guys…..problem with sunroof shade
Smaller one works no problem
Front one, opens fully but doesn't close. If I push the button to close it, I can pull on the metal that holds the front of the shade and pull it to almost closed position, while the electric motor is trying to open it, while I am trying to close it. So…. It opens it but not closing.
What to do for reset? Front one I mean?
Push the open glass button for 45-60 seconds?
With the shade part opened or closed or doesn't matter? And the glass closed? And hold something with a piece of wood?
And when it starts to cycle.… don't take the Finger off the button? Until it stops?
Ps: to repeat myself…… mu sunshade….. Not glas….. Only keeps trying to open…… even when open!

Owners handbook have description on page 156 @ Maintenance section, how to reset the sunroof/shade. (different language versions can make variances)
Read carefully: (also good idea to read complete handbook. Thre are many tricks how systems work)
Note: You have to keep switch pressed constantly totally about 2min, so use thump to avoid pain..)
SUNROOF RESET
If the battery is disconnected, or the power
supply is interrupted, whilst the sunroof is
partially open it will need to be reset.
Once the power supply is restored, reset the
sunroof as follows:
1. Switch the ignition on.
2. Fully close the sunroof.
3. Press the front of the sunroof switch, and
hold for 45 seconds.
4. After 45 seconds the sunroof will begin to
move. Keep the front of the switch pressed
until the sunroof and the roof blinds have
fully opened, then closed.
5. Once the open/close cycle has completed
and the sunroof has stopped moving,
release the switch.
The sunroof can now be operated as normal.

Yeah guys…. I found it to. But I have a problem with the glass part also. I can close it only if I stop it by button, otherwise it doesn't want to stay closed and it opens do first stage. I had last summer the glass off….. To service the rust on the frame….. Ant when I mounted it Back in…. Didn't fit it properly. I think its a 2-3 mm off. I don't know if it would relearn new glass position or I would meet to adjust the glass part again… better. Someone did this?

If you had it off and when you put it back, you find out that it did not fit properly. Hmmm... i am almost 100% sure nothing there have been expanded during the time it have been away, so your issue is that the glass part is not fitted back like it should and there are nothing to do untill its installed back in its original position. When its not sitting on its correct place it will touch the edge and safety system take it back because it is programmed so that it does not cut any fingers.

The sunroof part should land by its rubber pads (on sides) against roof / housing of the assembly. However: Small play and sand between rubber pads and metal eat the paint off and then metal parts start to rust and ofcourse: The noices...
I add thin layer of vaseline (in fact ACF-50) to prevent rusting about twise a year. That also took complete the creaking noises away from sunroof. Been totally silent since.
