Unhappy Supercharged VS NA Block

Hello all! So, I'm in a pickle. Fat, FAT pickle. Long story short leaving out the drama end of the pickle, I came home from the dealer with a barely running early model X351 XJ supercharged. Piston chipped, sidewall is unknown, and I've owned it for a year. There's zero question, it's getting rebuilt, and I'm going to do it in cooperation with a local sympathetic shop renting out tools, space, shop manuals, and knowledge on the cheap. It's not my first dive into major car repairs, and I normally fix planes, so I'm confident in doing this. I just know I at least need a piston and spark plug. I know there is a difference between NA and Supercharged pistons, the latter having a full ring on the outside whereas NA has two bulges (Thanks to you lot in a different part of the forum!). My next question is whether the short block is different in any other way? My next way forward would be to borescope, but I'm trying to be proactive in a worst case scenario situation, which by the look of the piston head it's going to be. Also any tips on R&R or leads on a cheap short block would be greatly appreciated.

TL;DR: Is there any other difference between the SC and NA short blocks besides the piston heads?

Also if anyone in AZ want's to help, I'm all about it. I'll be documenting part-by-part because the amount of videos on Gen III V8 repairs are slim to none.

If you don't already have it, you can get the official JLR Technical Training doc for the AJ133, both NA and SC, from my Dropbox here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/8y4iax9hm2...%20V8.pdf?dl=0
Not sure if it will answer all your questions but worth a look!

Also check here for other potential useful technical literature e.g. X150 that use the 5.0 engine download area

You need to be a little more specific about which year your X351 is.

For example there are different engine management systems depending on the year, different timing chains/tensioners, VVT units, and so on.

There have been a few threads on the topic of swapping in a donor engine, for example https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...uilder-208237/

And the big thread on the rebuild process https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ebuild-177468/

OP's Personal Profile shows that his XJ is a 2011.

Hopefully, this will be a most interesting and informative thread and the OP will provide us with details and pix. And that he will be able to find all the parts he needs from salvage yards at low prices.

In case it's not rebuildable, here's a used 2011 5.0L SC engine on Ebay: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F163317377575
