Survey: Water Pump Replaced?
I bought my CPO 2013 XJ SC about a month ago and took it in for its 30K mile service a couple of days ago. I wanted to put the water pump issue on record and mentioned that I smelled coolant occasionally. As it turned out, the water pump was leaking so my dealer replaced it under warranty.
I started this thread to see how many 5.0L XJ owners have had their water pumps replaced. Please include your model year, NA or SC, approximate mileage when replaced, and current mileage.
To the Moderator: Can you make the responses automatically tally by the above parameters?

John,
Not exactly. As of now, this thread has been viewed 211 times. That's not the same as "... over two hundred (people) have read your post..." because it is likely that several people have viewed this thread multiple times. The counter shows the number of times a thread has been opened (and presumably read) and not the number of people, unless you want to count the same person more than once.
Although I'm a newbie on the XJ Forum, I've been on the X150 Forum (2007-up XK/XKR) for years. Owners of 2010-up 5.0L models have reported many water pump issues, including one owner who experienced a catastrophic engine failure.
The same 5.0L engine is used in the XF, XJ, XK, and F-Type, with some variations. The water pump has been redesigned at least once, and I believe there is a TSB on it that applies to all models.
I am surprised that no other XJ owner has had their water pump replaced... yet.

I second what Stuart S said. We purchased our 2012 XJL SC with 40,000 miles about 6 weeks ago and I believe the carfax stated the water pump was replaced. I'll check to confirm and update this post. I'll also add that while looking for a 2011 or 2012 XJL, roughly a third to a half of the 20 or 30 vehicle carfax reports I read noted a water pump replacement. It got to the point that I was hoping the vehicle I was interested in had the pump replaced so that I knew it had been done (and obviously hoping the replacement was better than the original pump). Just my two cents.

Just saw this thread. I had the water pump replaced on my 2012 XJL in Sept. 2013 after about 17 months service. The mileage was 14,732. I was getting ready to undertake a cross-country trip from Las Vegas to Miami Beach and I took the car in for a look-see just to ensure that there weren't any problems. The service dept. informed me that the water pump was leaking so they replaced it at that time.

I'm glad you made this thread. I'm going through the aftermath of a water pump failure on 2012 XJ with 31,426 miles on it. I was leaving a MAYPAC fight party and was accelerating to change lanes and I just noticed the a/c starting blowing hot and when I got to red light I got a warning of coolant level low. Got to my destination and noticed all my coolant had leaked out on the ground. At this point I'm freaking out. The car was overheating at that point. I had someone bring me to Wal-Mart to get some coolant and poured in to make it to the local Jaguar dealership. Driving to the dealer very slow and running all redlights my car was steaming from under the hood. I finally made it to the dealer and called a cab. Spoke with the service manager on Monday morning and he told me the water pump went out, but Jaguar wanted them to do a compression test and the test showed that one of the cylinders were leaking down. My car is still at the dealer waiting on further instructions from Jaguar. The main culprit was the water pump going out. I will advise going forward about what problems this caused with my engine.

Update, Went in for an oil service at 42k (I have my car serviced @7.5k intervals, don't trust going 15k between oil changes) and they found the water pump had begun to leak and replaced it. I looked at the old pump and it had a good trail of dried coolant leaking from the weep hole. Kieth, my tech, says that the pump seals were not holding up. So bottom line is if you smell coolant get the dealer to check and replace if there are signs of leaking.

You might not be covered under warranty because you continued to drive the car after the coolant light was on. They can probably read this in the computer. If the coolant light goes on, PULL OVER, TURN OFF the engine and get towed to your mechanic. Since you fried your motor, you probably cooked your tranny fluid. Chance the fluid in your transmission or you might be looking at a new tranny in a few months. If they deny your claim for a new engine, I would suggest going to an independent Jaguar shop for a replacement. At the dealership, the engine & transmission will cost $30,000.00+ U.S.
It actually is covered that been confirmed already it's just a matter of what repairs will need to be made.

I devoted forty years as a seal engineer and engineering manager, improving water pump seal performance for Ford, GM and Chrysler, and others, and have been issued over a dozen patents covering these improvements.
I also took part in extensive technical exchanges with French, German and Japanese producers of such seals during this time, plus participated in organizations such as the Society of Automotive Engineers, advancing automotive water pump technology.
I know zero water pump seal failures, and therefore zero water pump failures is possible, because working with Chrysler on one of their more popular engines out of some six in production at the time, I enabled them to achieve such reliability.
My unique water pump seal design enabled and demonstrated zero failures under 50,000 miles, unprecedented in any automotive engine, by any manufacturer, up to and after that time.
Unfortunately, international conglomerates made sure this technology was killed-off and denied other automobile manufacturers world-wide.
Why? Quite simple. It is as lot more profitable to sell an inferior OEM seal, and then five more replacement seals for rebuilt auto water pumps in the huge automotive rebuilders aftermarket for the same car, than to sell one superior seal that would enable the water pump to last 200,000 miles, instead of, on average, only around 40,000 miles.

And you are absolutely right you can't make money off of a part that never fails. I was quoted $1,750 to replace a water pump on a 2011 supercharged XJL.
