Default Timing Chain Replacement

Hey guys, I am now doing the Timing Chain replacement as I have started to have rattles on my cold start and have read it is the common issue for this problem. I'm at 65k miles. My mechanic recommends I do the phasers and sprockets with this as well, but I haven't seen any of you guys post about replacing these items yet. Any opinions?

Is the sprocket showing signs of wear? If so, I'd replace. Once they get it apart you might be better suited to answer the question of what else to fix. I just replaced the timing chain tensioners at ~50k and even those were not worn at all in the old style. My chain was fine.

I haven't heard of many people actually replacing the chain itself especially at 65k miles. You'd have to seriously have something out of tolerance to cause a stretch.

Tensioner and guides and any necessary gaskets and front pully bolt (maybe) are all that is needed. My JLR tech did mine and that's all the was replaced at 70k if I remember correctly.

Mine were done at 77k miles by a Jag specializing indy. He replaced chains, tensioners, guides AND phasers. I have the parts, and the parts were all bad. He said that it is not atypical for engines that have had oil changes at Jag specified 15k miles. He also said it is very UN-common for cars that have had more frequent oil changes, ie, 7.5k. I saw the parts and can validate that they WERE worn.

To confirm the previous poster. My XJ had oil services done every 6 months or 5k miles.

Sorry for the late reply, but I definitely think this may be my best option. How much did your indy charge you for all of this?

I figured as much. My only concern is that I will be well over 100k miles within the next 18-30 months. This makes me want to replace Phasers and Sprockets as I'm worried they could be an issue by then. How many miles are you currently at, Xjss?

My XJ had 126k on it when it was totaled on 10/20/2022. And was running better than it ever had. She is gone and replaced by an Audi SQ5 which I like because I'm sitting higher and is all new technology. also, is quite fast and handles well.

Mine charged $5,600, BUT, that included all front engine parts and required parts (all OEM), S/C coupler, undersized S/C pulley, hoses as needed, and tranny service. I would have hat the water pump replaced since he was in there, but mine was replaced less than 20k miles ago.
