Default Which trickle charger / battery conditioner

Hi,

I was looking at getting a trickle charger for my XJ Supersport and wanted to see if anyone could recommend one?

Jaguar sold one in the accessories book for £118 and it looks very similar to the CTEK ones, just Jaguar branded instead. The previous owner had one fitted but has removed it, that connected to the battery and had a two pin connector like you see on some RC car chargers / 12v battery chargers

Would something like this be suitable for the XJ Supersport or not?

CTEK MXS 5.0 Car Battery Charger - the smartest battery chargers in the world!

Thanks!

I use the CTEK 7, never had a problem and you can rig it up the same way as the previous owner.

Thanks for the reply

Ah okay, that seems similar price range to the one Jaguar sell so it may be the same one rebranded

I assume the 5.0 is not good enough for the job due to the size of the battery? Haven't got the car yet so can't check the rating on the battery

+1 to CTEK

The 2-Pin Connector permanently wired to the battery makes connection/disconnection quick and easy:

Had no trouble with the CTEK 7000 in over three years and never had a flat battery.

Thanks for the pic, where does it disconnect from? The part in the bottom middle of the picture? The 'chunky' part of the wire?

Also the people at CTEK said once I get the car and find out the AH rating of the battery then they can tell me exactly which model would be best to buy

Yes. The black and orange piece is a two pin connector.

Which trickle charger / battery conditioner-ctek_2.jpg

It comes apart in the middle leaving the end with the flying leads permanently connected to the vehicle.

Okay thanks for explaining

CTEK have recommended the MXS 5.0 as the car has a 90Ah battery

One question though, I haven't checked, but I don't think the ring terminal will fit over the battery terminal. The eyelet hole is 6mm and the battery terminal is (I'm guessing) a lot bigger.

What's the best way to attach it? Some sort of adaptor that goes around the ring terminal that I can attach this fly lead to?

Simply cut off the as fitted one and then crimp on the correct size ring terminal for your battery.

Tempting but the charger has a 5 year warranty, so if I 'modify' it and it becomes faulty in a few years time they won't take it back surely?

That's why I was hoping there was an adaptor of some sort but if not then I'll have to cut it off

The other option is to use the croc clips as supplied. It is the way I use it as opposed to 3G's way.

Up to you really.

Yeah might do that instead then as long as they're quite strong and don't move around much

Less messing around installing it too

The clips are quite strong and when I do use it, it takes me about 5 mins to set up and the same to put away when finished.

Oh the crocodile clips don't have the same 'quick connect/disconnect' break feature in the middle of the cable?

In that case I might have to find an adapter or cut the existing ring terminals off haha

Just been out to check mine. I have the quick connection fitted to the croc clip leads. Mine is the MXS 7 though, maybe there is a difference across the range.

Thanks for checking

I'll email CTEK and get them to confirm

Maybe worth asking them if they do the correct size terminal for your car to avoid having to cut off and crimp on a new one.

Just a thought.

Hello,
The charger comes with a set of crocodile clips which have the comfort connector at the end of them, the m6 permanent attachment lead supplied with the charger also has the comfort connector on the end of it.
If the battery terminals are bigger than M6, then an additional adapter would be recommended, either-
M8: CTEK 56-261 M8 Permanent Attachment Lead - the smartest battery chargers in the world!
or
M10: CTEK 56-329 M10 Permanent Attachment Lead - the smartest battery chargers in the world!
So I'll measure the terminals and see

Default Battery charger

CTEK MXS 5.0 is OK for batteries up to 110 Ah. I have one for my XJ8 X350, works fine for my Varta 95 Ah 850 A, even if it's heating substantially during charging. Croc clips are OK too.
