Water Pump - Clarity please?

Water Pump - Clarity please?
Hi all
My 2014 XJL has 15K miles on it. Took it in for annual service, and was told that I needed the water pump replaced. I read a lot on this forum regarding the pumps, and am surprised that this had to be done (and from what I hear is done every 2 years approx). This is a bad design of course.
? = Is this a design flaw that is unavoidable? I ask this as when my warranty runs out, I don't want a ticking situation that I will be replacing something like a water pump in 2 years after?
Thoughts on this?
Thanks,

Slojotaa, I have owned my car for 15K miles (car has 48K miles on it) and I am not seeing any issues with the water pump. While it does appear that the water pumps are a weak link (atleast from the factory), having it fail after 15K miles seems a bit extreme in my book.
I would say to have them fix it and then simply keep an eye on things. There will be aftermarket items out there that will have fixed the design flaw out shortly (if not out there already). This motor shares a lot of parts with the Ford 5.0L motor and I would suspect that the water pump is one of them. The Mustang/F-150 world will have an upgraded component in no time flat if this is also affecting them.

First NO. No part interchanges between the Ford 5.0L and the Jaguar 5.0L. They are COMPLETELY different engines!
Yes the water pump is a known problem. But they are cheap and not difficult to replace. $90 every 2 years would be no problem.
Hopefully Jaguar or the aftermarket will release an improved version. I know my STR finally needed a water pump at 125K miles and it was different from the stock unit.

Be glad that your dealer found that your water pump was leaking before it failed and your engine overheated and was damaged. Just make sure that the latest version of the water pump was installed in your car.

Really? How could you be surprised if you read this thread? https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...placed-132537/

slojotaa,
Please add your XJ to the following thread: Survey: Water Pump Replaced? Please include your model year, NA or SC, approximate mileage when replaced, and current mileage. Documenting the excessive number of water pump failures may persuade Jaguar to cover all or part of the replacement cost if out of warranty.

2012 XJL Smelled coolant at 51,000. Took to dealer and they told me water pump was leaking. They also told me that the cooling pipes were a two piece design and they all should be replaced. At a cost of $2,500, I had all the cooling pipes replaced. 5,000 miles later I smell the coolant again. Going back to dealer next week (nearest appointment available). Will post once I get the results. Heard some horror stories about the cooling system on several XJ's 2011-2016

The water outlet pipe in the early cars was a two piece, bonded design that failed at the joint. The replacement pipe is a different design. Note that the water outlet pipe is different for the naturally-aspirated AJ133.
Both the AJ133 and AJ126 in my opinion should have their water outlet pipe and rear heater pipe linking both cylinder heads replaced together as they are each subject to failure and can cause catastrophic engine damage.
It's wise to check the coolant level weekly and any sign of coolant level changes should be investigated. If the instrument cluster displays 'Coolant Level Low' stop the engine immediately and determine the cause of coolant loss to avoid engine damage.
