I had heard about the shortage. However when I purchased my 2012 on dec 26 2011. I remember I had my choice of many 2012s in ebony and ultimate black in addition to midnight black. ??? I believe this shortage affected azurite blue and indigo blue for 2013. Midnight black is metallic. So I'm not sure this is absolutely correct.
My 2012 XF is Midnight Black, code PEF.
I believe the color isn't offered any longer. I like it quite a bit. Can be very blue at times and rich/dark black at other. Too bad they discountiued it.
Okay, the designers thought the black C-pillars make the rear window look wider. Personally, it doesn't work for me...except on a black car. I saw a white XJL with the pillars painted white, and it looked spectacular. When they are painted the same color as the car, the chrome window surround really stands out and the beautiful shape of the roofline shows off. Please, Jaguar, offer the painted pillars as an option.
White is not feminine and I think other than black looks the best with the painted c-pillars. Go with the color that makes you keep turning around to look one last time.
Before you make a final decision, look at the Caviar exterior color: it is spectacular, especially in the sunlight. Pair it with a Truffle/Ivory interior and chrome or polished wheels, and you'll have a car that stands out in any crowd. But make sure those C-pillars are painted to match. It makes such a big difference. Please post some photos of your final decision.
By the way, if you go with white, check out a car that has white painted wheels. Very elegant.

Reason: Forgot to specify colors
Be brave, go for the white - you know you want to . In the UK you can order the Sport Pack which gives you a black grille, front and rear spoilers and red brake callipers. Now I have to say that does look very cool.
Hey, Executive: Normally I don't nit-pick. but the car you described as "black over ivory" is black over Jet (the only ivory is the piping on the seats). You had my hopes up, 'cause I'm looking for a beautiful XJL with an Ivory interior. I'm stubbornly resistant to black interiors, however, partly because I live in Texas, and black is sooooo hot. Also, I have eyes that are 70 years old, and at night, climbing into a black interior is, for me, like being inside a deep cave...wearing sunglasses...with my eyes shut.

2010 XF Premium, Black with Barley interior, Sold 12/9/11
The 2011 XF 5.0 Supercharged, Lunar Gray super fast!
The one I get the most compliments on is the 2012 XJL Portfolio 5.0, white with the black interior with contrast stitching, 1200 watt Bowers & Wilkens and Executive package. When you roll in this one it really looks like something. This car without the supercharger is almost as fast as my XF SC, but still gets over 27 MPG highway @ 70 MPH. What else can I say? XJL the white is it.
