Default For X351, V130? Or V138?

I've just taken on the 2012 XJ (NA), that I need to be able to maintain and support, with one of the first orders of business being addition of a new key.

Have you any experience with British Diagnostics V130 or V138?
From what I've found, they both work with the 2012 XJ. Does one work better than the other? Or do they perform the same on the 2012 XJ?

From what I read, it looks like the V130 supports programming of keys, but the V138 does't. Is that correct?

Any experienced insight on the British Diagnostics V130 and V138 as they apply to the 2012 XJ is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I see what you are trying to do and that is access the onboard computers via a connection to OBD2 to program the key transponders, and do not have an answer to that. However, the current Jags seem to be using a more secure system in that at the dealer the connection goes online to JLR and checks the car based on it's VIN.

So, sorry. I guess only those familiar with the SDD tools would recognize the British Diagnostics products, and versions. A little more detail would help those not familiar with the tech side...
The SDD is a tool to interface with the diagnostic system of the Jaguar Land Rover products.

The JLR SDD that is used by dealerships is available on the Topix JLR website. A company called British Diagnostics also offers different versions (as does JLR) for different model years of JLR products.

http://britishdiagnostics.co.uk

From what I've read so far,,,
The V130 version is listed as having full functionality for the XJ model year 1998 through August of 2012, and includes key functions.
The V138 version is for the XJ 2005 through June 2014 MY, but as I understand, does not have the key utilities that the V130 does.

My post is looking for an X351 owner/maintainer that is familiar with one or both of these, and knows a little about them and where they differ.

I have read posts in and asked in the General Tech Help forum, but my question is specific to the X351 (2012).

Any knowledgeable help is greatly appreciated.

I would think that the V130 would work on all 2012 XJs as production ran through July of 2012 and then they began 2013 production in August with a lot of changes in Transmissions and electronics for example they switched to a Bosch ECU among other things. The only XJ model that was produced as a 2013 prior to the August/September cut over was the Ultimate that had all the updated components and it was built in the early spring if I am not mistaken.
One more point, when I took delivery on my 2013 that was built in 09/2012 it came with the older style "clamshell" keys and they had a program in late fall to replace those keys with the newer plastic wonders. I was able to keep the old ones too. So I still have both old and new and all 4 work, so adding a key should not have changed IMO.

I would think so too. But ideally someone who has and uses a British Diagnostics SDD might read this post and respond from experience.

Thanks for the details on the timeline, that does help with understanding of the difference of the V130 and V138.
From what you describe, and applicability table on British Diagnostic's website, it appears the V138 might be backwards compatible to a point.
And it looks as though either the V130 or V138 would support my wife's XJ, dated October 2011.
This is where any insight from a forum member that has an SDD would be very helpful.

Can you tell me why the new style keys are called the "plastic wonder"?
Are they an improvement, or is it a tongue-in-cheek tag?
I know they're smaller, but are they better? Worse? Do they do more, or less? Are they more durable, or fragile?

My tag. actually loved the old style but it weighs a ton so we use it as a spare or when I let my wife "borrow" my baby.
