Default XJL Replacement Tires

HI all new XJL owner here. My car currently has 22K miles on 19 inch OEM tires. They are pretty worn but still have 5-6 worth of tread life. I am looking for suggestion from owners who have move from to another tire. I do live in FL so an all season tire is not a necessity but a tire with good wet traction is.

I purchased Continental ExtremeContact DWS (Dry, Wet, Snow) primary because of their superior hydroplaning resistance, wet traction and ride comfort. They also provide excellent noise comfort, longer life and less unsprung weight than the OE Pirelli P-Zero tires that came on my XJL, meaning the tires will remain in road contact better over undulating or washboard roads.

Thanks you for your response. I note that the OEM Pirelli's are rated at an XL (extra load tire) and the Conti's are listed as a SL Standard Load. Is there any concern given the weight of this vehicle?

I suggest that you go to tirerack.com and seach for both tire specs and you will see the actual speed and load ratings (expressed in lbs./corner) for each. Generally I'd found that given the stock tire size, just about all replacement tires for that size tend to have sufficient load ratings.

I think that the speed rating can be more an issue only if you have a car that has speed capabilities above the tire ratings. Example: You would not want to put H rated tires on a Supercharged XJL but, H (130 MPH) rating is standard on the XJL, equipped with Pirelli Zero Neros, because the American market XJLs are electronically limited to 120 MPH top speeds. An H-rated tire would be expected to have softer sidewalls and longer thread wear than an ultra-speed rated tire (Z, Y, W) so, if ride comfort and tire expense is an issue you may look in that direction. Thread-wear is expressed in numerical terms; such as 200 for an ultra performance tire, 500 for an H rated one. It does not say how long they will acutally last on your car but, gives you a reference for comparison.

I second the Continental DWS tires. I just switched from the stock summer tires to these and they are much quieter and ride better than the old tires. Also, I have the supercharged model and these tires grip much better in wet and cooler weather. No complaints.

I think if you stay within the rated load limits for your vehicle you will have no problems whatsoever with the Continentals. I would focus more on the superior hydroplaning resistance, wet traction, and ride comfort of the Continentals which address real everyday concerns, and their longer life and less unsprung weight compared to Pirelli P-Zeros, thus providing your car greater ability to keep the tires on the road in spite of washboard surfaces.

Please give us a review when you get your new tires. I have been looking at the Noble S1 myself for its stated quality ride. I do like the Contis on our XF.

My 2012 XF came with Continental ContactPro's on the 19" wheels and i have to say i like them.

They perform well in the rain, snow, dry even when the car is pushed to the limits a bit. The ride quality is good. They also last long. I am just about at 30,.000 mile mark and the wear indicators are a few mm below the thread. Maybe another 2500 miles or so, i will be replacing them with the same ones.

I highly recommend the Continentals. The prices on them have come down quite a bit too. Tire rack has them for $271 per tire - that's in size 19.

2008 XJR, optional 19" wheels.

OEM Pirelli P6s, very noisy after 15,000 miles. Replaced with Bridgestone Potenza RE970AS Pole Position "an ideal blend of ultra-high performance handling with the added benefits of enhanced wear and all-season traction. " Possibly true if you live in the tropics.

Much quieter than P6s. Mildly annoying on transverse bumps.

Wet roads and rain: When moderate temperatures unbelievably good, the best I have ever had.

Packed snow and ice: Terrible. Really bad. If you have to drive on snow or ice get something else.
