Club,
I have no idea (with the '12) if the EPB can be made to automatically select to ON when P is selected.
A dealer told me this re the S/S system, don't know how true it is but;
The large battery is used to start the engine on every occasion, the small battery is used to maintain the cars function (a/c, lights, radio etc) when the engine is off. The system monitors the condition of both batteries at all times, if one (usually the smaller one) falls below a certain level, the system turns off the S/S function. Hence, if you disconnect the small battery, the system turns off. Also, if the main battery falls below a given performance level, the system turns off.

Not 100% sure, but somehow i have an memory that if you keep pulling EPB switch up more than 5sek, you turn auto-EPB function On/Off ?
I turned it Off years ago, since i use my XJ in winter and there are an risk of freezing EPB when conditions are correct, so most of users do not use EPB much in winter.
(canīt remember how, maybe with SDD or just pulling switch?)

All, per the 2010 repair manual from jaguar, it states that the EPB only automatic feature relates to disengagement. This occurs whenever: 1) the motor is started, 2), gear shift is not in the PARK position, or 3) the gas pedal is depressed. I am going to look through some of my other manuals and see if they say something different. Now, this is not to say that there isn't some "hidden electronic switch" that hte manual is not going to talk about. I know one is the belt minder dinger being able to be turned off. Not mentioned anywhere, but you do a special Nintendo switch sequence and the dinger goes away. So, maybe there is some truth to what Vasara said. May have to play with my car just to see. Having the e-brake auto engage with park doesn't sound like a half bad idea. Just have to make sure to shift the car out of Park and give the system a second to start releasing the EPB.

Thermo,
I just played with my '12s EPB and couldn't get it to do anything out of the ordinary. On the '12, the EPB will auto release in D or R when there is a throttle input.
From memory, I believe there was a court case where a driver was squashed, and killed, by her Range Rover. Again, from memory, she got out the car and it ran over her. She hadn't selected P or N and I guess, as we can't ask her, thought the engine had been turned off by the SS and the EPB hadn't been applied.
I'll try the other 2 and see if they apply the EPB with the engine running and the drivers door open.
