Default XJL Supercharged ran out of oil

I had an oil leak it appears from the looks of some spots on the driveway. Was driving home when a clanking noise started. Drove gently home and tried to troubleshoot. Maybe 10 minutes. No warning lights. Towed it to a repair shop (not a specialist just a regular shop) and they said there were two quarts left. They said the engine is dead and needs to be replaced. My questions is it salvageable? Is it worth a rebuild or get a rebuilt one? The people I have spoke to who sell rebuilt ones say it is not worth it to rebuild but will take my old engine off my hands if I replace it. It runs but each time it gets worse obviously. Last question since it is apparently fried what is the risk to do an oil change and see what happens? Nothing to lose right? Appreciate any feedback.

I am not an expert. But what harm could be done if you were to fill it up with oil and then start the car; unless you have already done that. If you do buy and install a rebuilt engine, two things: what kind of warranty comes with it. And, they should buy your old engine or accept in trade for part of the purchase price. I believe the cost of a rebuilt engine is somewhere between $5k & $10k. You should know that my price data is not current, but several months old.

Hey There! Thank you for your feedback. Filled it with oil and it sound like nails in a dryer when it runs. Getting rebuild quotes to buy another engine from $11-$27k. They have a 1 year warranty on them. As mine is still running it seems like it may be cheaper to fix it. But having to remove the engine and ship it is not cheap to do either just to find out. I have not found out what they would trade in my engine for, as that should be an option. I was told it takes months to rebuild an engine. Not sure if that is correct or not.

Tapa Engines sells remanned engines (The LR forums have used a few) that have been improved to handle more output power. Search the forums for better links: https://www.ebay.com/itm/133864261453

I paid $9k for a 2012 5.0 supercharged AJ viii with 50k miles from a scrapyard and another $4k to have it installed by a local shop.
While the engine is out, replace your cooling system, coolant pipes under the supercharger manifold, change your supercharger oil if it's original and you're reusing it and snout/coupler as well as maintain the PCV system if you'd like (way easier and cheap to do). Also take a look at replacing the rear coolant crossover pipes these are all PITA if you have your engine installed, as well as the upgraded timing chain and tensioners if your replacement engine doesn't have it. Check rear main seal for leaks, or do it as preventative maintenance it if you're nervous.

I do not have parts lists, they are all available at your dealer if you ask them about the latest revisions.

It will be more cost effective to just get a new one dropped in, it took my shop 1 man, 40 hours.

As driven several engines to the desctruction on racing you can expect following work for oil starvation:
- Main crankshaft bearings / big end bearings for rods (these propably make part part of the taping sound)
- cam shafts and lifters maybe? Exhaust valve steams do be checked. (another possible source of taping sound)
- Piston skirts have to checked for wear. Same go you would like to change rings for pistons and hone the cylinders. In most cases cyliner liners survive as long as you don´t have lose parts from piston, rings or valves. If there are swapped alumium from piston, that can be solved away by acid and honed.
- Oil pump, maybe?
I would say that if you get bare engine with heads for good price, its more economic to do the swap, since work hours would be much less.
If you have skils for engine repair yourself, then it different.

First thing when you notice some weird noices or behaviour from your vehicle: Stop and look for a reason. (execpt if you are racing and lead the pack )

Thank you all for the feedback. Trying a few more places to see if mine can be rebuilt. Buying a rebuilt one is $11k with zero miles on it. Used ones with 100k miles are around $6k. To buy a rebuilt one they take the old engine but won't quote me a price to fix mine. Trying a few more options because with install all in will be $14k for a rebuilt engine.

It's mostly not worth the risk. That being said, if you find a shop with the skills that would be great, but until you tear it down you don't really know the extent of damage other than best guestimate.

$11k is cheap for a remanned engine. Jaguar quotes almost 30k for a new block from the factory, which is rediculous considering the service interval contributes directly to risk of engine failure.

Hey There. I have several quotes in that range. Jagbits $11.5, Fraser $9.8k, Tapa $11k all with 0 miles rebuilt. Trying the three for rebuilding mine so far just info from one who won't do it. If a rebuild can be done much cheaper I would for sure try it. The Jag price is crazy. Frustrating they take the core to rebuild others, maybe I will see if I can keep the supercharger.

I hear you. I lost my engine due to oil starvation so I have been down the road before. I just got a used engine with low miles instead of reman. If I had the new Bosch ECU I would have bought an uprated rebuilt from Tapa.

14k installed is a pretty good price, I got several quotes and ended up going with the shop I trusted to begin with.

If replacing the engine. They switched electric management systems between years. If I remember correctly it went from Denso’s generation 1.6 to Bosch management system.

There is a thread on it in this forum somewhere?
