Default Oil Sump Gasket

Jag Classic Parts shows the EBC 9626 fits the X305 6.0. Same for the XJ81 6.0. But they show the EBC 9623 for the XJS 6.0.

Could it be that the 6.0 sump gasket is different between the XJ81 sedan and XJS last gen 6.0 V12s?

That seems unlikely since the XJ81 sedan V12 seems to be the same engine setup as the XJS V12. Unless the undercarriage difference required a slight change in pan design.

The real mind-bender is that Jag Classic says that both types fit all V12 models from Series 3 forward! Whats going on here?

I just got a set of those hefty wide ramps with the 9 degree grade and detachable ramp pieces that should allow decent access. The pan has been drippy for a while now and it is time for an oil change.

EDIT: Just updated my signature..............

Hi- you want the later version. The earlier version is paper, and the later version is a metal/sponge multilayer gasket. You use no gasket goo with the later metal style. When I do 5.3 oil pans and sandwich plates or anything else gasket wise I always get the later version. Watch out who you order from… SNG Barratt always sends the right gasket, but Welsh has sent paper gaskets for multilayer prices.

After studying images of the two, it looks like they are a slightly different shape and the bolt holes are different. Looking under my car with the mirror and some difficulty I can see the bolt pattern and it looks like the 9626 is the right one. Barratt says the 9626 is a paper gasket, it is what it is.

First image is EBC9626 for XJ81 and X305:

Second image below is EBC9623 for XJS 6.0 and likely all the 5.3, newer style is rubberized metal:

What good are 22 bolts if the gasket is only paper? Never mind, it is almost 30 years old, I'll give it a pass. Thanks to Barratt for the nice images.

That’s very curious, didn’t notice the difference. I guess it must use a different oil pan and sandwich plate as well.

SNG Barratt came through with the correct sump gasket, they likely got it from the UK for me. It is the EBC 9626 as in the top photo above. The gasket is not paper it is rubberized metal. A nice bonus.

I will be getting started on that shortly, plus the cooling system maintenance and will be ready for next summer's heat. I can take my time on this job, since I have "other" transportation now:

This car is a Jaguar too, but you can hardly tell it is related to the XJ12. What a world of difference. I didn't set out to get a convertible. Or a black car. Or a 12 year old Jaguar. But I did! And it has been really fun. "My car" is featured on the Jagbits homepage banner, I feel special.

Don't worry, my beloved XJ12 is staying with me. It is a wonderful car and I love it. Gonna give it some sweet attention soon.

Time to pop over to the X150 section. I guess I've invited myself into that club! Lots to learn about that car. No, mine is not quite perfect, but that group is very enthusiastic and helpful, as most everyone here is.

Did you end up replacing the sandwich plate gasket or just the oil pan?

I haven't gone under the car yet, since I was busy with the cooling system for a few weeks. Finally wrapped that up a few days ago, all seems well. Lots of new rubber hoses, new thermostats and clean fresh coolant. It was quite a bit of work but mostly topside.

I don't plan on going deeper than the oil pan gasket, just thinking that will be adequate to stop or reduce the oil drips. I will get a better idea if there are other needs, i.e. checking for the rear seal.

First drive, post cooling system work. The XK can stay parked for a bit now!
