Default Power steering pump new seals DIY

I suspect my pws pump to be leaking and the alternator which sits just below the pump has swirled the oil around the engine bay.
It is a ZF unit with Jaguar part# MNA8111BB. ZF# 7682 955 127.
I was not able to find any seal kit here in Europe so I ordered the kit from RockAuto; edelmann 8834, around $20.

The closest thing to an ‘how to’ video I found was this one from a BMW E30 pump which looks fairly similar.

Also see John Bakers pictures in a thread from 2020:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...g-pump-232486/

As I will find the seal kit in the mail I will post pictures of the procedure and the things I run into.
What I would like to know is if this seal kit is available in Europe and how.

Give credit where credit is due.

Ordered the seal kit with Rock Auto on Monday 27th, package was delivered at my house in The Netherlands on Thursday 30th. Custom’s procedure was started while package was sent out for delivery. That speeds up things quite a bit. DHL this was. Very impressed.

Changed the seals today. Very simple task, anyone can do this. It is exactly as described in the video of the e30 pump.
The Edelmann 8834 seal kit contains one extra small round seal which I did not replace simply because I couldn’t find where it goes.
The kit contains an elaborate instructions paper but that made it very confusing. I didn’t understand at all what was said in there.

When you loosen the four bolts holding the two halves together and open up the pump, this is what you’ll see. Remember: take pictures of every step in the proces for future reference.

Getting the c-clip off the shaft was somewhat of a challenge. In the kit is a replacement for the clip bends out and does not return to its original form. Once off, retract the shaft downwards while holding the pump. In that way, the 10 little metal plates will not fall out. In the video the guy takes it all apart, I degreased the circular thing holding the plates and put a piece of tape over it so not to disturb their original position.

Now the metal ring with the oval hole in it can be taken off. Make a picture so you’ll know where the dowels and the little hole are in relation to each other. The dowels could fall out.

Next thing you could do is thoroughly clean this half of the pump before taking the end seal out. I used a piece of metal to protect the rim when prying out the seal with a screwdriver.

Tapping the new seal in with a suitable sized socket. I greased the seal with rubbergrease.

From here on it is simply putting it all together in reversed order. Apply petroleum jelly on the large seal between the two halves of the pump.
Do not over tighten the four bolts. Two of them need to come off again when installing it back on to the car. The pump is held by a bracket using these 2 bolts.

Great instructions. I guess I’ll jump right in and do mine!

Easy rebuild after reading Olav’s excellent instructions.

very little to add !! This is easy.

To get the pump out you should remove the air box, upper radiator hose, and if you have fat hands, the thermostat housing. So buy a thermostat gasket in advance.

There are three 10mm bolts. Two in front one in the back. The rear one had a wire zip tied on.. had to cut the zip tie. Greasy mess so plan on doing this after pressure washing everything.

The Edelman kit had a slightly different shaft retaining clip than original. The shaft on my pump had noticeable end play before rebuilding. The new clip eliminated the end play.

In addition to the kit and perhaps a replacement reservoir hose, you will need two dowty washers for the high pressure hose. I got them from SNG Barratt but generic will probably do.

On and I had a slight different method to remove the seal. These are really blind bearing pullers but the make sea removal easy on an arbor press.

And I managed to get a second power steering leak during disassembly (also in picture, old clip and smaller new clip)
