Steering rack
Dave the Daimler still putting up a fight, part way through removing steering rack for re-seal. If any one else does this note the nut and bolt connecting to steering shaft must be removed to drop rack as it holds in a grove.
Also remove battery leads as it’s tight and your spanner’s arnt far from starter motor. Any tips for putting it all back together, I’m not really sure how you get the steering set straight ?

From my understanding there is a index or adjustment on the rack on page 30 abouts
Doc coming below
The rack is most likely the ZF 7852 series but I could never see my rack full data plate on car
Your situation is the same on the inline 6 X300 and a question there would get a bigger audience
Do you have the rack resel kit # and vender source ?
I have a # of questionable certainty for a full seal kit and your # may confirm or be a smaller part count and better option for just to remain the rack on car end cap gland nut seals

Hi Stu, I’m no expert, but had to take the rack out when I did my starter. Took me about 30 minutes to work out that there was a groove in the spline when I was re-assembling it.
One thing to be careful of, is if you have moved the steering wheel a rotation after the rack was disconnected, then the clock spring won’t be centred, and that it could break at full lock after assembly if it’s not.

Refurbished rack came back, pretty much fitted back on but quite a struggle. There isn’t much room with that v12 lump to work around.
Not so sure how to make sure steering is centred, there is locator grove in steering shaft so that can only go in one location, unless steering wheel is 360 degrees so in theory I guess it should be somewhere near ?

Ask over on the X300 section as there are topics on the centering there

Rightly or wrongly, I put some cardboard around the spline to protect it, put a spanner on it, then turned it all the way to one end, then counted the number of turns to get it all the way to the other end. Then turned it half that number back. I’m no expert though. I think I watched a you tube video.
Like I mentioned above, if the clock Spring out the rack isn’t centred properly, there’s a chance you will break the clock spring.
