Default * PLEASE Help* 04 VDP timing chain questions

I have a 04 VDP with 130k on the dash. Recently I have been hearing a " slap " or ticking when in gear with foot on the brake. When in park the noise goes away. When in gear and accelerating from a stop I can hear the "slap or tick " noise I think I am hearing. Especially if I'm next to a wall or something when the noise is amplified.

Does this sound like a timing chain tensioner failure?

Anyone with my type of mileage experience this?

If not timing related what else could be making this noise under those conditions?

This will become my daily driver here soon for a few months and I really cant afford for something bad to happen.

Any help or suggestions would help!

These models have very few timing chain/tensioner issues that I'm aware of, I think what you are hearing is a lifter tick. I have 210,000km on mine, chains are fine but I do get a slight lifter noise now and then usually when cold. I don't run synthetic either.

Valve lifter noise should be there all the time. Your post indicates it is only present with the engine under load. Maybe piston slap ? Is it there hot or cold ?

Doesn't sound like timing chain related issue. Maybe more like a small exhaust/manifold leak that may not be apparent when the engine is not under load.

It is there hot or cold.. but usually a little louder when hot.

I thought that myself. But could a small leak only make the noise sometimes. More hot than cold...

The factor that gets me is when I put in park the noise goes away. Shift into D , hold brake, you can hear it good and also accelerating from a stop. But in park, the noise seems to 100% goes away, seems.

What types of things can I do to hunt the issue down?

I have had a similar noise on another car..the logic is that if the there is a small exhaust leak it is prominent when the engine is under load ie,put it in 'D' loads the engine and in 'P' it has no load.
As metal expands when heated the 'leak' would become more obvious. If you wanted to eliminate the theory an exhaust repairer would detect it quickly.

A little hard when we can't hear the noise...

Yeah it's funny how a little exhaust leak can sound like a metallic ticking sound. Caught me out years ago. I'd be checking the exhaust manifolds.

Ok. Thanks. I've had exhaust leaks on other cars and it's nothing like this noise. And the other leaks, the noise was ALWAYS there.

I don't know why I'm so stuck on it being timing chain related but that's where my mind keeps going. I'll get it on a lift and see what happens. Thanks for your input

It can vary depending on the "leak' (if there is one) the smaller it is and the position could explain your cars symptoms..

Either way could you post any diagnoses when you get it looked at. I would be interested in the outcome.

Best of luck..
