I've got the nav and trunk CD changer; no DVD. The nav is useless and the screen and UI is just dated.

I would love to take advantage of modern technology:

- Bluetooth and Apple's newly announced Carplay — AppRadio (Pioneer)

Pioneer, Alpine and Kenwood all have units shipping that are compatible.

Question: Can the nav system/screen & electronics be easily swapped with one of these modern units.

I'm not sure I'd tackle the install myself; but I love the idea of bluetooth, streaming and using Carplay and those compatible apps with my VDP.

Anyone else interested, done this, or even installed older aftermarket nav/audio/BT units in an XJ8 or VDP with the larger NAV screen?

 

It ain't easy. If you were to swap out the Nav head unit, you'd have to rewire the AC controls as well. There's a member on here that has attempted it - not sure of his progress/success:

Another problem is the system uses the now seldom-used D2B optical system to communicate with all the components in the stack. Finding components still made for D2B are minimal.

I have opted for veffremov's BT Adapter that replaces the CDC. Works remarkably well and lets me attach my smartphone to the system to stream music. The unit does not allow one to make phone calls through the car, but I already have the factory BT phone unit in my car, so I'm now covered for both phone and audio.
