Hi, I just bought a 2004 XJ8 and the dealer told me it had the bluetooth mode in it. But every time I press the phone button I get the message saying the handset is in use. Im not sure if he was wrong and I don't have it or if Im doing something wrong?

Congrats on your purchase. Go back to the dealer and ask them to demonstrate how to use the alleged Bluetooth module, if they can't politely hint that thy should maybe fix it.
"handset in use" happens to me on rare occasion if the BT/Phone module gets confused, it usually fixes itself. If it happens to you all the time could be an indication of a bigger issue.

Congrats on your purchase also. My 04 XJ8 did not come with the phone i found the complete kit on e-bay and install it works great. One day I got in the car and the "handset in use" came up I was worry that I wasted a lot of cash. I turn the car off and turn it back on and it reset and started working. I would take it back and let the dealer check it out. It did happen again, what I did this time was unplug the BT/Phone module unit clean the connect and plug it back in and have not had anymore problems. The BT/Phone module unit is also the easy part of the whole set-up to get to, just remove the cover to the rear vent(it just pops out) and it's sitting right there
Good Luck,

I have the same issue and have tried the same things as well. Disconnected the battery, disconnected/reconnected the BTUM cable in the rear vent to no avail. Gave up for now, but I'll try tackling sometime later this year. If you do keep digging and get it to work, let me know (as will I).
