Default 04 xj8 VDP Heater issue

Hello all,
First of all please forgive me if am posting this in the wrong place as I am a new member and am still finding my way around.

My problem is that the passenger side blows warm and the drivers side does not when the temp is turned up. It is in single mode, Not duel so I am sure they should both be putting out the same temp.
Are there 2 different heater units or something? or is there a valve of some sort that opens and closes each side for different temps.
It is not a major big deal as I live in Florida and only use this function a handful of times a year, just wondering if any of you good blokes and girls had any ideas?
All the best,
Knobby.

It's an all too common issue. Usually one of two things. 1st and easiest is the auxiliary heat pump which pumps coolant through your heater core. 2nd is the heater core itself clogging.

Check and fix the pump first. It's actually even a fairly simple DIY to replace the brushes. Alternative motors can be found etc.

It is possible to reach down, carefully, and feel the pump running with the ignition on engine NOT running, and blower heat on.

In my experience, (but only reading this forum lol) the most likely root cause is

a partially blocked heater core which may be cured by flushing but chances are

it will have to be replaced.

Are you guys saying that when in medium heat position (2 lights), the steering wheel heater turns off? I didnt think that we could have just the seats on without the wheel on too. I thought the wheel was on high in any temp selection. Please prove me wrong, my hands are burning.

Hi Sean,
Luckily for me it was the pump and not the heater core, (well, For now anyway, wont really know that for certain until I have rebuilt the pump) I read on a former post somewhere on how to do the DIY fix so now are just waiting on parts, hopefully I can get this all squared away by the weekend.
Thanks again for your help and to every body else who helped me go in the right direction.

Great news. Did you confirm the fuse isn't blown?

I presumed that both sides were on the same fuse, I will get the hand book out and have a look.
Thanks for that insight.

Hi Sean,
Fuse #8 was good, I got the parts for the Aux heater pump and spent a glorious Saturday rebuilding that and getting covered in Coolant.
All in all it wasn't all that bad and I am really happy to say that it works like a charm now. I'm really glad it wasn't the heater coil as I would have to really read up on how to do that.
Thanks again for you great advice and sending me in the right direction.
Cheers,
Knobby.

Thanks for closing this thread out knobby. Glad it worked out and was only the pump. I say only because the heater core is a bigger effort, though it's all done from inside the cabin.

Just beware that spilled OATS (dexcool) odor can linger in your engine bay for a year. If you leaked onto the under scuttle, consider removing it and give it a low pressure wash.

And keep your eye on the coolant level as long as the odor is around. These cars are prone to pinhole leaks and the hoses are as many as noodles found on a plate of spaghetti.

Thanks you again for closing it out.
