04 xj8 won't stay running
I was driving down the highway and going to pass a truck when my car just suddenly died on me. All of the dash lights and everything electrical are working fine. Pulled it over to the side of the road and tried to start it bit all it will do is start, idle up to about 1000rpm, and then die.
I suspected the fuel pump so I changed the filter and got a gauge on it. Reading about 28 to 30 with key on and 40 or so at crank up. Leave it sitting and the pressure drops down eventually, but not sure if that's relevant.
It's at my friends house in Chattanooga right now, 5 hours away, but I will be going back up in a couple of weeks and would like to have some ideas on where to start or what to eliminate.
I had just filled up the tank with fuel about 10 min earlier. But not sure what kind of bad gas would have such an effect. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Drivers side towards front under plastic undercover. 5/8 and 13/16 open end wrenches. Takes 10 minutes to change filter. . The pressure gauge attached on the drivers side fuel rail. Just take off plastic cowling and you'll see it, looks like a tire valve stem. Open the gas tank otherwise Idk about depressurizing I'm not a mechanic. No, starts for a second and dies or I'd have driven it home. Do you have any input about my problem?

If you read my post called cranks fires dies you will see that I had a slightly different version of this happen to me. I removed the negative cable from the battery and touched it to the positive one which merely empties the built up DC in the computers. I waited a couple more minutes with the car completely dead and inert and reattached the negative cable. The car started and ran perfectly for several hundred miles now with no hint of trouble and this had come out of nowhere. Did you undo your battery cable before you changed this filter or attached the gauge? If you have no done this already, I do suggest it. My theory is the main ECU sent bad or wrong data to the fuel pump or the coil packs or any number of other links in the electronic chain.

I don't have the workshop manual, but I will definitely find out what the proper pressures are before I go back to Chattanooga to rescue her

Come on people! Is this the ONLY dang suggestion I get on this site? Surely to God someone on here has some alternative solution to offer besides resetting the computer and confirming the proper fuel pressure. Hell,, I'm gonna be traveling 5 hours one way in just a few days to try to get this car fixed and back home! Come on...THINK!

If you take the specific code you got and reference it in the workshop manual you'll get possible causes and the faultfinding to nail down the cause. If you can post the exact code(s) you got in this thread then you'll get a bunch of people chipping in that have had the same to deal with in the past.

40 psi is too low, should be in the 50s sure the spec is 55psi
Sounds like the pump or the regulator
G532449t37 : CHECK THE FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE WITH THE ENGINE
CRANKING
1. Key in start position. 2. Record the fuel pressure reading.
Is the fuel pressure 4.5 bar (65.25 lb/in²)?

From what I can tell, there is no pressure regulator on this model. I was hoping it wasn't the pump, but everything I know is pointing in that direction.

The jaguar dealer in las vegas sells parts cheaper via the web than my local dealer does over the counter, usually by 20% or so. Even with shipping the advantage is worth it. Once you get a jaguar part number for your pump, you might be able to cross reference to ford. Maybe Lincoln LS uses same one? I did find ford parts for my X-type that matched and were less money. I have gone back over this thread and do not see the part about misfire codes. Are you saying you got eight codes for misfire on all eight cylinders? Did you drive back to the stranded car and read codes or pay someone to tow it somewhere and read them or what? Confused here.
