04 XJR Parking Brake Fault
Good morning folks. A few days ago I was out in my Jag and parked on a very slight incline. When I parked, I acuated the EPB and heard a pop and the fault displayed on the message center. I got it up on a lift and had my son actuate the brake. I can hear the motor run and the cables move but I can't see what is wrong. Is there a bracket mounted to the frame that could have broke? What could be the source of my problem?

I have moved your thread from the forum for the X308 to the forum for the X350, which is the Jaguar factory project code for your 2004 XJR. Problems with the Electronic Park Brake are common and it sounds as though something has definitely gone wrong.
If you have a diagnostic system capable of reading the proprietary Jaguar Chassis codes (C-prefix), it might be helpful to scan the codes to see if they will narrow down the diagnosis.
One possibility is that the actuator (motor) encountered some resistance somewhere in the system and the pop was the resistance being overcome. If this was the case, a reset of the system might resolve the warning lamp:
1. Disconnect battery for 30 seconds
2. Reconnect battery
3. Start engine
4. Watch for message in instrument cluster, APPLY FOOT BRAKE or APPLY PARK BRAKE
5. Pump brake pedal 5 times then hold it down
6. Apply Park Brake (pull up on switch in center console)
7. Release Park Brake (push down on switch)
8. Apply and release Park Brake 5 more times to ensure no error is present
If that doesn't solve the problem, another possibility is that the pads have worn to the point that a piston has extended too far, and that was the pop you heard. Your XJR probably has separate rear calipers for the EPB and to retract the pistons requires a two-pin wrench or some improvisation. If you remove the outer half of the caliper (two very tight Torx screws, if I recall correctly), you can then use the tips of a pair of needle-nose pliers to rotate the piston clockwise to retract it. Here's a method for turning the piston without removing the outer half of the caliper:
If you are certain a cable hasn't broken, another possibility is that one of the gears in the actuator (motor) housing has worn or broken. See post #1 in this thread:
