Default 04 XJR separate caliper EPD calibration

The 2004 XJR has the separate Brembo EPB calipers. Tried both the Operators Manual and the JTIS method to get into calibration mode, but neither works. After pad replacement, the calipers are adjusted to remove most of the slack so that pads do lightly touch the rotor on both sides. Continually have a PARKING BRAKE FAULT message.

When operating EPB, the cable DOES pull to move the arm about one-third of an inch, yet that is not enough to have the pads put a bite on the rotor. I can press on the arm by hand and move it a touch more, so it is like the motor is not yanking far enough.

Is it that I need to get on a dealer's computer to get into calibration mode?

Or there's a fault. (Module would have codes, dealer can read.)

Hi jncarsn16,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us.

It would be helpful to have some background. For example, did the PBF occur suddenly, or after you replaced the park brake pads or rear brake pads?

The fact that the EPB motor/actuator is retracting the cables enough to move the caliper arms one-third inch suggests the EPB control module is working to at least some degree. The control module determines how far to move the arm in response to the signal from the Hall Effect sensor inside the motor/actuator, which is mounted between the rear wheels above the differential.

If the fault occurred after you changed the EPB pads, the caliper pistons may just need to be adjusted outward a bit more. This can be done manually. There have also been some reports on this forum that it can also be accomplished by repeating the steps in the the DIY calibration procedure:

1. Disconnect battery for 30 seconds
2. Reconnect battery
3. Start engine
4. Watch for message in instrument cluster, APPLY FOOT BRAKE or APPLY PARK BRAKE
5. Pump brake pedal 5 times then hold it down
6. Apply Park Brake (pull up on switch in center console)
7. Release Park Brake (push down on switch)
8. Apply and release Park Brake 5 more times to ensure no error is present

If this does not solve the problem, you can try repeating the above several times. If this won't clear the error, you may have to try adjusting the caliper pistons manually or there may be a malfunction.
